To tackle this, her team brings together synthetic microbial communities, anaerobic high-throughput platforms and organ-on-chip technologies, building experimental systems that let them dissect these interactions mechanistically, from single molecules to whole communities. 🧬

We're proud to spotlight an EMBL heidlebfrg alumnus, Norbert Kraut. With over two decades at Boehringer Ingelheim, including more than ten years as Global Head of Cancer Research, Norbert has been at the forefront of translating discoveries in molecular and cellular biology into cancer therapies.

His drug discovery programmes focus on key oncogenic alterations including p53, HER2, and KRAS, contributing to the development of precision medicines for patients with difficult-to-treat cancers.

A remarkable example of how foundational scientific training shapes careers that change lives. 🔬 #CancerResearch #Oncology #PrecisionMedicine #DrugDiscovery #EMBL #Alumnus #LifeSciences

We’re thrilled to welcome Prof. Sarela García-Santamarina to the EMBL PhD Symposium 2026! Sarela is Head of the Department of Deep Microbiome Metabolomics at the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology (Leibniz-HKI) in Germany 🦠.

Her research sits at the heart of microbiome science, combining molecular microbiology, systems biology and the study of host-microbe dynamics with focus on: how do complex microbial ecosystems shape, and get shaped by, the drugs and the nutrients? Also, how is our physiology influenced by that?

Ross pioneered the concept of the “Robot Scientist”, AI-driven lab robots that autonomously design and run experiments. His creations “Adam” and “Eve” made history, and his newest project, “Genesis,” aims to automate eukaryotic systems biology.

Gaurav's research merges AI with systems biology to uncover how endogenous metabolites drive aging, cancer, and cellular signalling. From platforms that predict carcinogenic metabolites to mapping aging at the single-cell level.

Petra's lab develops microfluidic and lab-on-chip technologies for single-cell analysis, droplet microfluidics, artificial cells, and diagnostics combining automation and high-throughput methods to push forward next-generation tools for drug discovery and cellular analysis.

YOUR WORK STILL DESERVES TO BE SEEN! 👀 Got a poster instead of a talk? You still get to walk people through your work one on one and get direct feedback from your peers. Poster abstract submissions deadline: 1st of October. Link in bio or scan the QR code to submit!

Another great keynote! 👨‍🔬 Giovanni Stracquadanio, Personal Chair in Engineering Biology at the University of Edinburgh, combines AI, computational biology, and molecular genetics. He pioneered software for the Synthetic Yeast Genome Project and now develops AI-driven therapies for rare diseases.

Don't miss our Day 2 keynote! ⚙️ Virginie Uhlmann is an Assistant Professor at the University of Zurich and a Group Leader at EMBL-EBI. She leads interdisciplinary work connecting computational methods with microscopy, while advancing open and accessible approaches to biological image analysis.

Day 1 brings another keynote! 🔊 Paul Flicek is a Research Professor at the Institute for Systems Genomics at the University of Connecticut. A genome informatics expert, he led Ensembl development at EMBL-EBI and contributed to ENCODE, 1000 Genomes, and International Human Epigenome Consortium.

We are proud to announce our first keynote speaker! 🧬 Jennifer Roth directs the PRISM team at Broad Institute, expanding its cancer drug screening platform to 900+ cell lines. A biotech/pharma veteran, she helped develop Merck’s first FDA-approved HDAC inhibitor and has co-authored 50+ publications.
