Philip Larkin was a regular listener to The Archers. He’d be amused to hear that turkey plucking still forms a storyline. Here he is writing to his mother in Nov 56: ‘if you listen to The Archers, I expect you as smile at “Mrs Larkin” being asked to pluck the turkeys. #TheArchers @plsoc.bsky.social

Lovely day for the Avenues walk and writing workshop with Lyn Lockwood and Jane Bluett. The Avenues and Pearson Park looked splendid in the autumn sunshine, and Jane's writing guidance produced all kinds of fascinating responses to Larkin. Thank you to all our attendees and the excellent Artlink.

Of course I love #Larkin. I'm From #Hull, and Larkin is as Hull as Dean Windass, pattie and chips, the plotting parlour in Ye Olde White Harte and Reckitt's chimney. Despite the fact that he was a librarian from Coventry. #Poetry #hcafc

Sad to see the passing of Dickie Bird. I once met him on a train heading out of London after a meeting at Lord’s. He told me he couldn’t wait to get home to Barnsley; also that Richard Hadley was the best all round cricketer he’d come across.

Today marks the birthday in 1913 of one of Larkin's favourite writers, and personal friend, novelist Barbara Pym. Pym was born in Oswestry in Shropshire, and a blue plaque dedicated to her can be found there.

The wonderful writer and performer Ralph Dartford is our next podcast guest. Ralph takes us on a (train) journey exploring both the landscapes of The Whitsun Weddings and Edward Thomas's Adlestrop, taking in the halts and sidings of poetry, performance and teaching along the way. Coming soon.

Let’s celebrate International Women’s Day with this proud plaque in De la Pole Avenue, Hull. Larkin championed Stevie Smith in his review of her Selected Poems (1962) which concluded ‘Miss Smith’s poems speak with the authority of sadness’. No greater praise.
