‘Take the protagonists of Withnail & I, make them aspiring poets and transplant them to a squat in 1980s Liverpool…soak the whole thing in the sad eternal beauty of the Blues…’ LATCHKEY by Jeff Young From Sacred Parasite @sacredparasite.bsky.social www.sacredparasite.com/product/jeff...

Picture this. It is September, 1856. Southport, Lancashire, Nathaniel Hawthorne is walking along the prom. “Yesterday, a man stark naked was seen dipping a lady. Oh, decorous English!”

Wandering round Southport I couldn’t help thinking of the Morrissey song Every day is like Sunday which initially made me smile, then made me think about Morrissey, which made me cross. Hawthorne said “Southport is as stupid a place as I ever lived in” and I saw no reason to disagree

Did I send you this? Article I wrote [very quickly] about the Eric's raid. We made the Eric's badges in Progressive Books, so I was able to use them for the layout. Not that well written [very quickly!], think the editor wanted 'new wave bands'. Girlfriend & I were the first ones the police got.

Farage: "I’ve been physically more attacked over many years than any other politician.” Jo Cox was murdered. David Amiss was murdered. Stephen Timms was stabbed twice. Nigel Jones was attacked with a sword, survived but his aide died. Farage had a fucking milkshake thrown at him. Piece of shit.

Q: You are here against the backdrop of the war in Iran. Why focus on all these projects right now? We're still seeing gas prices soaring TRUMP: I want to keep our country beautiful and safe. It's such a stupid question you asked. This is one of the worst reporters. She's with ABC fake news.

I should have led with this: I think the poorer classes of Glasgow excel even those in Liverpool in the bad eminence of filth, uncombed and unwashed children, drunkenness, disorderly deportment, evil smell, . . . In my opinion, however, they are a better-looking people than the English

In 1856 Nathaniel Hawthorne spent his Bank Holiday weekend in Scotland (I know, I know). He's rude about Glaswegians, the poor, the rich, the scenery. Everything you would expect. Read all about it here nathanielhawthornes.blogspot.com/2026/05/nath...

wow -- with Trump standing behind him, a man (not sure who he is) offers this prayer: "We pray that he would be mindful of the poor and that he would be invested in the alleviation of suffering happening in the families preparing to bury their loved ones in Minneapolis."

Next Tuesday, 20th January, I'm doing a talk on Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne at the Adelphi, Liverpool. Tickets available from Liverpool History Society website. Or just turn up on the day.

Cupid in these latter times has probably laid aside his bow and arrows, and uses fire-arms,—a pistol,—perhaps a revolver. Nathaniel Hawthorne (1853)

Our new single, The Spaniard, is out on the 7th November on Velvet Records. Could I ask a small (or big) favour? On the day of release (this Friday), could everybody give it a listen and a like on their favourite streaming platform at least once.Thanks.

Fact check Amish Autism Autism exists in Amish communities, just like in the general population, despite myths suggesting otherwise. The myth of low autism rates among the Amish likely stems from limited healthcare access, cultural misunderstandings, and underreporting—not actual lower incidence.
