I’m excited to share our new preprint about network fairness and its ethical challenges. We spent many years thinking about this topic and shaping our arguments. /w @lespin.bsky.social @eliassi.bsky.social Ricardo Baeza-Yates , Pak Wong , Erich Prem , Meike Zehlike ,Suresh Venkatasubramanian

2-year postdoc to work on Autotelic Creative AI (ACAI): an opportunity for theoretical research on the foundations of creativity in AI and living beings (e.g. agency, autonomy, value grounding) + time to work on your own ideas fitting with the group's interests. DL: 11.9. bit.ly/4hEpIZz

Visualization is a balance between letting the data speak for itself and making it look nice and attractive. This is, for sure, the textbook out there that best captures these forces, so whether you're into visualization or not, treat yourself to a copy!

📊 My and @jhilden.bsky.social’s book has been out of print for some time, as our publisher closed down its general publishing arm. We are working on a 2nd edition, but it is not going to be ready anytime soon, so we’re making the current edition available as an e-book for €9.90. payhip.com/b/zbl43

Network (or, perhaps, systems diagram) of the day: From Ragnar Frisch's 1933 chart-topper "Propagation problems and impulse problems in dynamic economics"

TLDR Of course, squares (chordless 4-cycles) often feature when there are multiple shortest paths—if a shortest path follows two edges of a square, then there is a shortest path following the remaining two edges—but, we argue, non-square contributions are negligible for most practical purposes.

Chapter 13: @jsaramak.bsky.social & @pholme.bsky.social on temporal networks of social interactions. A fascinating chapter showing why static network snapshots often miss the most important thing: the timing and order of interactions. Social networks are dynamic processes, not just fixed structures.

Chapter 12: @fedebotta.bsky.social from @exetercompsci.bsky.social on online images and computational social science. A fascinating chapter on how images shared online can help us study politics, misinformation, culture, & collective behaviour and why visual data deserves a much bigger place in CSS.

Replication: 60% of the time, it works all the time.

📣 The difference between replicable and not replicable is not itself scientifically replicable. 📣 New work with Erkan Buzbas, showing that verdicts such as "X% of results replicated" are based on an inferential machinery that doesn't work. arxiv.org/abs/2604.26268
