bsky, help me out, i'm doing a tongue-in-cheek playlist for work, every title must have HEART in it. i've got most of the obvious ones, but i need your weird and obscure examples.

just watched this on Saturday, it absolutely fucking rules. really really solid film. BEWARE: it's also really really gross.

Happy #hauntalong, friends! Today I'm recommending a movie about beauty, aging, self-loathing, and, most importantly, COMMITTING TO THE BIT. The Substance (2024).

there is going to be, one day in the future, a day where a prime minister stands up in the House of Commons and makes a public apology for the historic denigration of trans people in the UK. it will be hard-fought, hard-won, and well-deserved. but: we will get there.

Civil servant transgender guidelines leak just dropped:

i want every trans person i know on here to know that i love and cherish you, and that 99.9% of the country in which i live could not give a rat's arse about which toilet you use, as long as you flush it and wash your hands after.

also, and i know there's probably nobody reading this to whom it applies, but: if you're a terf, just fuck right off. go on. fuck right off. it's my philosophical belief that you can take a long walk off a short pier.

a shelfie game, can you spot: * a game by a friend (or by you!) * a game you've played * a game you want to play * a game you don't want to play * a game you have too! * a game you'd steal from me * a game you won't own up to owning * a non-game book you love * a non-game book you hate

hidden item round (some are very hard!): * a green wooden bell * mismatched double-pointed knitting needles * a painting of a feather * two ghost figurines * a rotten pine cone * an open pack of batteries * a notebook * an anniversary card * a medal * a round mirror * a 3.5mm to 5.25mm jack adaptor

Sally Rooney's work being de facto banned in the UK because of her affiliation with Palestine Action is Good, Actually, because it raises the issue of the proscription being absolutely ridiculous with groups which which it previously didn't register so much.

in fact I'd go so far as to say this was excellent posturing from both Rooney and Faber, because it makes the UK government's stance on Palestine Action look even more f***ing stupid.

stellar performance here from a well-respected indie team who, instead of trying to make as much money as possible, take a humane approach to publishing games. i have not played Big Walk, and do not have a console on which to do so, but everybody i've heard talk about it makes it sound amazing.

going beyond this, it feels like we've been conditioned by RW media outlets to laugh and scoff at people they perceive as whiney pissants, rather than questioning the motives of the corporations that gain from us doing this. like the lady who sued McDonalds for the too-hot coffee.

i guess the headline "Your rights if your package tour company refuses to account for your chronic health issues" contravenes editorial shilling for rich corpos? but, like, if this was a woman with a stick or a walker complaining about poor access, would you feel the same?

actually I have something more to say on this through the lens of the horrific incident at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, but you'll have to wait until later.

so you don't have to get Mirror on your cookies, i checked the article for mitigating circumstances against my reaction of "jail for a thousand years", and the woman about whom this article was written does have a chronic digestive condition.

bearing in mind that a huge number of adult men think they could win in a fight against a bear, i really think you ought to design more of a barrier between a hypercarnivore and a delicious-looking long pig.

any company that puts "spectacle" above "safety" is not worthy of you sticking up for them, and in this, Yorkshire Wildlife Park is no different to TUI.

what the bloody hell was a zoo thinking, making an unguarded walkway over an enclosure for one of the world's most dangerous predators? and, why has the focus been on the individual who willfully bypassed the safety measures, rather than the company who provided inadequate safety measures?

yes, you can't design for every eventuality, but you can design for a really foreseeable situation where somebody wants to get closer to an animal and inaccurately assesses their personal risk from an almost wild animal.

there has been a lot of gawping at this case and, i have to say, tut-tutting about the man who climbed into a tiger enclosure and was sadly killed by an animal. regardless of the state of this person's health, which isn't really for us to comment on, i have heard little criticism of the zoo itself.

and sure her privilege gets her story in The Mirror, which probably wouldn't be the case if she weren't white and middle-class and (presumably) cishet. but actually this might be a pretty good example of a person using their privilege to stand up for an actual injustice. and that's good, actually?

so, sure! go ahead and scoff and take the piss. there are some ridiculous people in the world who would probably complain about this disingenuously. but not everyone! and, as much to myself as anyone else: do try to read the article first.

i mean i personally am guilty of being reactionary of articles about People Like Me (white, middle-aged, middle-class, dare i say English) making the most milquetoast complaints without reading the article. but here, this one? there's a genuine and reasonable complaint here. TUI treated her badly.

this is a common case of a headline being misleading, and actually the problem is a failure to consider the actual needs of a human being with a health issue. like, direct your ire at corporate mis-selling.

i ain't gonna go to bat for middle-aged, middle-class white people, but this isn't exactly the home run it initially feels like. actually, she probably does have consumer rights here.

i think, actually, that the tour company does have a duty of care to ensure that its customers have access to food suitable for them if the customer has bought an all-inclusive package. that's not the same as demanding a hotel cook you "english food".
