It's been over 2 months now that I switched from a mutable LinuxMobile distro (that served me very well for the last couple of years) to immutable #BengalOS as my daily driver πŸ“±. Having used apt and friends for ages I expected transition pain but having toolbox, nothing like that happened. I […]

@amartinz tested booting Phosh's BengalOS using OpenABL (so no U-Boot in between) and it worked: #LinuxMobile #Phosh #BengalOS #OpenABL

One gap in the BengalOS image builds was that packages with a higher version number in Debian could accidentally replace packages in BengalOS (unless a developer noticed beforehand) leading to subtle regressions like the #phosh's lock screen taking 10 times […] [Original post on social.phosh.mobi]

We just removed the firmware folder in #BengalOS for the #SHIFT6mq. All firmware is now either extracted at runtime (via @mobian 's droid-juicer) or upstream in the linux-firmware package, making it the first device of this kind in our immutable distro images. #LinuxMobile #Firmware #Phosh

Nothing planned for the weekend? Join us at this weekends contributor meeting in Bonn: https://ev.phosh.mobi/blog/hackspace-meetup-bonn-2026-10/ It's fine to drop in for just a couple of hours on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

ev.phosh.mobiPhosh Hackspace Meetup Bonn 2026We’d like to invite our members as well as everyone interested in Phosh, the Linux Mobile ecosystem, and the activities of Phosh.mobi e.V. to our third iteration of the Phosh Hackspace Meetup in the Datenburg in Bonn from **2026-10-09** (~18:00) to **2026-10-11** (~18:00). This will be an informal meeting and less structured than our Phosh Contributors Meeting 2026. This will be our **third** event in this local hackspace! Thanks to them for hosting us again! ### Where is it? We’re meeting at the Datenburg Hackspace at **Bornheimer Str. 25, 53111 Bonn, Germany**. ### Is there a formal agenda? No, this get together is mostly for **you** - we might chat about whatever comes up: daily driving experiences, interesting projects, news from conferences, planning of the next conference booth and whatever else comes up. There may be some lightning talks if someone steps up and there’s interest. ### What’s the timetable There is no exact timetable yet, but it should roughly go like this: * **Friday** : Early evening (**18:00**) until evening (~**22:00** , possibly longer): People arrive and get to know each other * **Saturday** : Afternoon (**14:00**) until evening (~**22:00** , possibly longer): Open discussions and β€œcore program” * **Sunday** : Afternoon (**14:00**) until early evening (~**18:00**): Open discussions, hangout If there are any major talks or big discussions to be held, we will try to schedule them on **Saturday early evening** , so that most people are likely able to attend (β€œcore program”). Watch this post and our Mastodon for updates. ### How does it work? Do I need a ticket? Everyone interested can join us at the location. There’s no tickets or registration required. If you want, you can leave a small donation to the **Datenburg e.V. hackspace** (donate) and/or the **Phosh.mobi e.V.** (donate) either online or IRL, but it’s **completely optional.** _All times in this post are in German timezone._

Besides improving the overall usability (e.g. enabling support for #cellbroadcast messages or improving camera usability and quality), our #BengalOS images now have wider hardware support by adding several SDM845 based phones like the _Google Pixel 3_ […] [Original post on social.phosh.mobi]

Stevia's presage completer will now read completion dictionaries from `$HOME`. This makes it possible for users to add dictionaries on immutable systems too. The new dictionary locations are supported by `phosh-osk-data-packager` already. We also added an English presage database from a modern […]

Some changes in other components: * _phosh-first-boot_ now uses systemd-homed's LUKS backend by default so users get an encrypted home directory without by default, we also add the user to the `sudo` group by default. Distributions can override the systemd-homed backend and the initial groups […]

Phosh's startup tracking improved considerably so that apps that take longer to start (e.g. Flatpaks on devices with slow I/O) no longer produce "Application is slow or failed to start" notifications. The ticket-box plugin got several issues fixed too (by Sparkd). 3/x #phosh

In Phoc we fixed an issue related to fling gestures that was the primary trigger of session crashes and added initial support for version 2 of the `text-input-v3` #Wayland protocol. The later helps with #GTK 4.24. It would otherwise pop out the keyboard too often when only version 1 support is […]

For the β˜• quick setting one can now select what to inhibit: `idle`, `suspend` or both. This is useful on Qualcomm phones that are often configured to not wake up from suspend on phone calls: #phosh

@phosh users: There are some regressions regarding OSK input (like the keyboard showing too often or text prediction not working) when using #Phosh with apps using #gtk 4.24. So if possible please stick to 4.22 just a bit longer, until these are resolved. Note that this also applies to Flatpaks […]

We had a great time at the MiniDebconf in Winterthur. Here's a short look back: https://ev.phosh.mobi/de/blog/minidc-winti-2026/ #Phosh #LinuxMobile #linux #mobile #minidebconfch #debian #BengalOS

ev.phosh.mobiPhosh.mobi @ Mini Debconf Winterthur 2026Members of Phosh.mobi e.V. attended the MiniDebconf in Winterthur in August. The Debian project builds a universal operating system for desktops, laptops, servers and phones. As with almost everything in the Debian project, these conferences are completely self-organized by project members and, with more than 100 attendees, are not quite as β€œmini” as they might sound. Four days of DebCamp (with hacking and Debian-related topics and socializing) were followed by two days of conference talks. The event was held in filasez, a recently founded, alternative school using Free Software for their school systems. Four members of our association attended the event. We demoed Phosh and Debian based phones at a small booth during the conference days and gave a short talk on Phosh and BengalOS. The talk sparked quite a bit of interest which brought more people to the booth. It’s becoming a common pattern that people are surprised by how well things are working and how usable the demo phones appear - which was encouraging and motivates us to continue our work. BengalOS wasn’t the only talk about immutable OS images so we decided to have an ad-hoc BoF on immutable images and established a matrix room to discuss immutable image related topics in the future. We had a great time working on phone-related issues across Debian, Phosh, BengalOS, and the sdm845 kernel tree. We also enjoyed reconnecting with familiar faces, meeting new people, and discussing phone-related topics throughout the conference. Thanks a lot to the organizers and to Paco for providing us with great food throughout the event. Thanks to everyone who supported our work through a donation at the booth or via the online form.

Phosh's caffeine quick setting (β˜•) can be used to prevent the system from going idle and from suspending. This can be tweaked now so that one can have the system go idle but not suspend.
