New work on the effects of psychedelics on hierarchical cortical propagations out in PNAS! www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/... Counter to our expectations, psychedelics attenuated bottom-up propagations into the Default Mode Network across substances and species. Thread below:

To note some limitations: 1) quantifying whole-network hierarchical propagations is reductionistic, and almost assuredly misses more nuanced hierarchical processing occurring throughout the brain. See this paper for one example: www.nature.com/articles/s41...
2) These studies were nonclinical. Mental health associations can be opposite in healthy vs. clinical populations (x.com/pineurosci/s...). Xue Zhangโs work, conducted in the sample from study 1, provides further insight into these directions (jamanetwork.com/journals/jam...).

Consequently, we sought to test a core tenet of existing theories on how psychedelics impact large-scale brain function: that psychedelics alter hierarchical processing in the brain. Some of these theories are nicely outlined here (pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/36280799) although others have emerged since
