One year, my parents both left to go vote. They told me they were going to the polls. At that point in life, I had only heard of the north and south poles. I was terrified they were leaving me alone while they went on a months-long expedition.

Does anyone else find it off-putting that campaigns treat the election like an auction: whichever candidate raises more money wins? There might be truth to it, but I still find it off-putting.

If snow days are "built into the schedule" but there's no early release on years with no snow days and any used snow days have to be made up, there are no snow days built into the schedule.

I've seen a couple of YouTube videos recently where the presenter looks human, but the script they're reading sounds like AI. Even granting the presenter IS human, I don't think that makes it not slop.

I don't check my mail often. Apparently, the post office "tried" to deliver a certified letter. The "attempt" did not include coming to my door or ringing my doorbell. I'm not going all the way to the post office to collect this letter.

For an amount of data I want to back up, I worked out that an LTO tape drive would cost the equivalent of 3 years of cloud storage. However, LTO tapes can store data for ~30 years.

I've done some setup recently to enable me to connect to my home network from anywhere. Just in time for it to be too expensive to go anywhere.

Particularly with AI generating so much content these days, I find myself increasingly concerned with epistemology. What Is Knowledge and How Do We Know Things?

I have not been having much luck with Seagate's RMA process. Of five disks received as RMA replacements, I've had to send three back as nonfunctional. It costs $20 and two weeks every time I have to send a drive back.

"The English remained paralyzed by their own rivalries until the following April, at which point Æthelred made an invaluable contribution to the war effort by dropping dead"

I just remembered a rhyme from high school English (to the tune of "This Old Man"): He loves her She loves me I love him though I'm a "he" Orsino, Olivia, Viola the three Stars of Shakespeare's comedy

One of my cats feels the need to challenge the vacuum cleaner whenever I use it. He'll come from anywhere in the house to bristle his tail at it and swat it if it comes too close.

I got an automated email about an RMA I'd submitted. The attachment had a .xls extension, but it was a plain-text file. I wonder if the company knows they're doing that.

I spent some time on the road behind a cybertruck last night. Its tail light is a strip of red LEDs across the entire width. When it brakes, the central 1/3 or so of the light strip turns OFF.

There's a habit many people around Houston have of turning on their car's hazard blinkers when it rains. At night, when seeing is poor due to rain, flashing lights in my face is absolutely unhelpful.

I read in a book today about Edward I siezing vast quantities of "corn" to feed his armies. I knew that couldn't be referring to maize because that's a New World crop unknown to 13th century Europeans. Apparently, corn used to be the word for any type of grain.

One thing I haven't seen discussed is the selection of Dolby AC-4 audio for ATSC 3.0. Opus has been available since 2012. Choosing a different lossy codec is simply an error.

For years, my kitty has begged for whatever I'm making in the kitchen, only to refuse to eat it when I put some on the floor for him. What is it he finally eats? Lentil soup.

I had all the insulation sucked out of my attic. It was 20+ years old, and I could hear rodents scratching around up there. I'm hopeful the new insulation that arrives tomorrow will do an even better job, but for tonight, my AC is really struggling.

I checked out so many origami books from the library when I was a kid. I didn't pay much attention to titles or authors, plus it was a quarter century ago, so it's difficult finding those books again now.
