Looking back at a very packed June before the summer break. A pleasure to have my abstract selected for the #BCNMicrobiome alongside presenting my ongoing work at @isglobal.org scientific seminars. Great opportunities to interdisciplinary dialogue
Excited to be co-hosting this seminar today at
@prbb.org@isglobal.org. We’ll discuss with Christina Nicolaidis, Josep Antoni Ramos-Quiroga, Laura Sanmiquel Molinero, and Salvador Macip.

We are delighted to welcome Lindsay Hall (@halllab.bsky.social) as a keynote speaker, who will discuss early life microbiome dynamics!
What can we really say about the gut microbiota and neurodevelopment in children?🧠🦠In our last paper, we reviewed 78 studies. The main takeaway is not what we know, but what we still cannot infer🧵

👉Confounding remains a key issue, often unmeasured or poorly controlled.
👉Methodological heterogeneity is high (different microbiome profiling methods, outcome definitions, and statistical approaches), which limits comparability and prevents meta-analysis.
Where do we go next? We need:
1. Longitudinal, well-powered cohorts
2. Proper control of confounding
3. Standardized microbiome profiling protocols (STORMS) and outcome assessment
4. Multi-omics integration
🔑Only then can we move toward causal inference and clinical translation.

In neurodevelopmental disorders:
- ASD: some taxa shifts reported, but findings are inconsistent.
- ADHD: highly variable results.
Functional/metabolomic data hint at immune & neuroactive roles.
In the general pediatric population, associations remain modest & inconsistent.
🚨 Major limitation: lack of causal designs. Only ~42% of studies were longitudinal.
⚠️Most were cross-sectional, so no temporal ordering. Are microbiota changes causes, consequences, or correlates? Still unclear.
Very relevant piece in Nature Mental Health on ASD. The field seems to be moving beyond a single diagnostic label. Placing heterogeneity, developmental trajectories, and underlying mechanisms at the center of inquiry.

But tensions are emerging. Has the spectrum become too broad? Two reads that are better understood together: expanding complexity vs collapsing definitions. www.tes.com/magazine/tea...
We just published the first peer-reviewed validation of the Spanish Developmental Profile 3 (DP-3) in 440 28-months toddlers. This parent-reported instrument reliably measures cognitive, motor, language & social-emotional development:
📌 bpspsychub.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/...
🧠 Key influences on development were captured: age, siblings, maternal education & reasoning, and breastfeeding duration.
The DP-3 can detect both broad developmental trajectories and subtle subgroup differences.
Fast and scalable, the DP-3 is ideal for screening large populations.

✅ The Spanish DP-3 showed good internal consistency (Cronbach’s α > 0.7), acceptable structural validity (CFI = .924, TLI = .848), and high sensitivity to developmental change across repeated assessments. It also correlates with the gold-standard BSID-III.

Me and a few of my mates got together and wrote a review on the current state of clinical translation of microbiome research.
A great summary of the state of the art for microbiome research.

very inspiring keynote talk by @prakashlab.bsky.social to kick off the 2024 edition of @isglobalorg.bsky.social scientific retreat. Great gathering of colleagues presenting some of the work conducted during this year at our institution
Science takes time - a lot of time. Time that is more and more difficult to make available because of increased workloads. Time that exceeds the temporary contracts of postdocs and PhDs.
I'll illustrate this using our paper published in Nature yesterday. 🧵 (1/x)
