There is one thing that I don't understand (well, many ofc). Again studies show that there might be a) a tiny black hole or b) a dwarf planet beyond Pluto. I just can't fathom that we CAN observe galaxies from just after the big bang but not Planet X. Why? #astronomy

Can it be really true, as the WSJ wrote, that Viktor Órban could become the next Secretary-General of the UN? That would be extremely weird and it signals that we are maybe at the same point where the League of Nations ended: no respect for international law, only Realpolitik.

And yes, this is also the fault of the EU and the US, who have applied international law only when it is in their interests - anti-China tarriffs, not denouncing Israel (or holding it accountable) etc.

When you start to see it... it's basically everywhere undergirding certain mainstream psychology and cognitive science theories. And it's so insidious and underneath so much methodological and theoretical machinery (pun intended) that we should question it much more.

I'm glad more people are openly posting this because it's so often presented as the opposite. Those who push back against "human = machine" are called dualists, Christians (as an insult), and worse in some weird "no you" attempt. It's not just here, I've seen it at conferences from philosophers!

Something odd happens if you argue that the concept of machine is not well fit to describe living systems. Often, the response is not just that it's wrong: it's heretic (vitalism!). What this says is that the machine view of life is more a modern crypto-Christian belief than a scientific theory.
