In 1992, a Park Service staffer's offhand magazine item about Sandy Hook's new warning signs got read as official recognition of the nude beach. The naturist leader who'd lobbied for them was thrilled — until she double-checked and had to walk it back in print.

At Playa de Cantarrijan, nudists say they're the ones retreating — toward the rocks and the cove — when visitors unaware of the beach's decades-old tradition react with anger. The fix nudists want (plain signage) keeps getting blocked by Andalusia's regional government.

In August 1936, the nudists meeting at this Indiana lake voted to stop calling themselves nudists — becoming the American Sunbathing Association, Sunshine & Health taking over for The Nudist. The club has been on the same ground, unbroken, since 1934.

A shipwreck cost Anne Brigman a breast. She answered by photographing her own nude body in the Sierra Nevada granite, calling it the fight for "clean, strong freedom of the body and soul." One of the first women to turn her own figure into a force of nature.
