The grave danger of mega$ to Govt was well-noted by H Arendt in her '51 Totalitarianism: 1) being a separate power, it creates its own policy 2) being "superfluous" to the nation, its policy has only pvt meaning 3) w/ pvt meaning in power, public faith in govt is destroyed.

Grim Per Prof Snyder, wd-be autocrats punch holes in Lawful Order by setting up ‘border’ spaces where nat’nl law does not apply📌 Moths do this to eat, but autocrats do it to destroy the scarf 📌

One month after DHS bought a Hagerstown warehouse for $102M, Washington County, Md. board of commissioners will vote to pledge support for ICE operations. The facility will cost ~$110M/year to operate. The county collected $300K/year in property taxes when it was a warehouse.

How can she be so callous as not to feel outrage at how she was betrayed? Perhaps she overlooked Yrump’s sleaze for the greater political good, But when she found out he was at the heart of the trafficking, and she had to lie to conceal it, How could she not have felt used??

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

CNN put together a supercut of Pam Bondi being for releasing Epstein files before she suddenly turned against it

They would hear her keeping her mouth shut. Recall, her father ‘fell’ off his yacht.

Forbes@forbes.com

“If Ghislane Maxwell has information about anyone who has committed crimes against victims, the FBI and the DOJ will hear what she has to say,” the deputy attorney general said.

It’s ALSO about: -“price of a nest” - unaffordable! -worry over children’s future -anxiety over culture, planet survival -disdain of male posturing, lack of care: Catastrophic erosion of hope📌

Kaitlin Kal Lee@kaitlinkallee.bsky.social

By 2030, 1 in 4 women in developed countries will remain childfree. Up to 45% will be single by choice. Society will frame this as a crisis. Governments will panic over birth rates. This is about choice though… It's about women walking away from the roles that kept men comfortable and powerful.

Insecurity In the modern condition, where everything has changed and ungroundedness is endemic, The idea of trusting oneself has become untenable, And one *must* resemble an image of some sort to feel successful: ->great disputation over *which image to impersonate*📌

Kevin M. Kruse@kevinmkruse.bsky.social

A lot of this country’s problems boil down to straight white men who see themselves as some sort of default “normal” but any variation on that as “an identity” that is “political”

Greed and racism Have the same source: shame over one’s vulnerable self, to be remedied by either -savage acquisition, or -savage oppression of others: Same force, different options.

Wajahat Ali@wajali.bsky.social

You're seeing America kamikaze itself into a brick wall. It didn't have to be this way. But greed and racism, our two sins, will be our downfall. Too many people still with their hands in the sand.

Jesus, word has it, *stilled the waters* While these folks seek to trouble them, Claiming allegiance all the while to what they can never be.

Mrs. Betty Bowers@mrsbettybowers.bsky.social

Christian Nationalists always have their eye on what is important--shoving a religion they don't even follow down your throat, while they idly sit back and let your plane crash.

Memorable, fascinating, and alarming! Earth is sounding the alarm, and we had better heed her📌

Mike Sowden@mikeachim.bsky.social

OK, this is wild. In September 2023, geophysicists across the world started monitoring a very odd signal coming from the ground under them. It was picked up in the Arctic. And Antarctica. It was detected everywhere, every 90 seconds, as regular as a metronome, for *nine days*. What the HELL? 1/

“Vengeance is mine, saith The Donald” You have a challenge from a self-deceived poseur.

A convicted criminal who has had endless trials wants to make it so he can imprison or kill anyone he wants without a trial.

…one guy who is the front man for a group that would replace the Public Thing [res publica] With “our thing,” Taking charge of Govt power, separately from the public interest: Note: “Our thing” in Italian is “cosa nostra,” which is apt here.

Kai Ryssdal@kairyssdal.bsky.social

I just really need everybody to understand that everything that’s happening in and to the global economy now (and all the businesses and people in it) is the entirely predictable result of the intentional decisions of one guy who doesn’t understand how the global economy works.

Ah “If we are going to do *our thing* we must make sure no one can identify us!”📌 (Some may recall the phrase in Italian, and note its methods and the separateness of its purpose from the lawful order, against which it must be vigilant.)

Jon Cooper@joncooper-us.bsky.social

Why are ICE agents wearing masks and dark sunglasses?

The only ‘Invasion’ is by them! Malevolent, invidious, incompetent, and cruel, And glorying in it like drunken thugs, Using the levers of power like war clubs, smashing heads for the thrill of it.

Brian Tyler Cohen@briantylercohen.bsky.social

We are not under invasion. There is no justification for suspending our constitutional rights. Every single American should speak out against this, loudly and forcefully.

“Due Process” is about us💥 NOT about the accused person!

Allison Gill@muellershewrote.com

People still do not grasp that the constitutional right to due process is afforded anyone inside the U.S. REGARDLESS of status. Even if you’re just visiting here.

Self-loathing is a qualification for entry: -won’t disown the loather-in-chief -will do anything he says -won’t quail at cruelty.

Seth Abramson@sethabramson.bsky.social

I’d say that Kennedy Jr.—whose deranged conspiracy theories are now likely to cost America a new COVID-19 booster this fall—won’t be happy until his narcissism costs tens of thousands their lives, but the truth is he won’t be happy then, either. He’s a miserable man engaged in miserable misconduct.

‘Victimhood’ Has a personal ontology without which it doesn’t exist: ‘Misfortune’ cannot create victimhood without a *deep grudge* at play, And its depth is in childhood, where lonely envy found no recognition, and the rejection then festers to be inflicted later on someone else.

Kevin M. Kruse@kevinmkruse.bsky.social

Imagine the biggest problem in your life being about which bathroom a total stranger uses. Imagine pretending random people you'll never meet are somehow victimizing you with their existence. Imagine being that hard up for troubles that you have to invent them just so you can play the victim.

True But the anxiety is not just the dreaded ‘replacement,’ which characterizes all rt-wing mvts, But a deeper dismay at their own impotence as human beings, unable to believe *their own* sufficiency in a world of others, unless they demonstrate ‘winning’ to themselves📌

Mrs. Betty Bowers@mrsbettybowers.bsky.social

If you wonder why men *obsessed* with the United States having more children are kidnapping children and sending them to other countries, those children were the incorrect color.

Politics Exists in the Public Square📌 If a power is installed that replaces the Public Purpose with cruelty and deception, Replacing our civic bonds with corrupt purposes, promoting rancor among the people instead of respect, The People must reclaim the Public Square📌

Acyn@acyn.bsky.social

Booker: Do you think we got the right to vote for women because a bunch of men on the House floor got together and said “on the count of three, women get the right to vote..” That’s not how it happened… Change doesn’t come from Washington. It comes to Washington.

“It’s ’our thing’ you know” Musk Note: in Italian, that’s ’cosa nostra’ Right?

Khashoggi's Ghost@urocklive1.bsky.social

This is a disaster in the making. Read this thread and then please call all your reps and demand that the US maintain control of our own military defense. Elon cannot own and control our missile defense or our satellites. Please make a fuss about this.

Spot on📌 Angry at exclusion, much of public wants vengeance, And long failure to tax wealth adequately has bred it: In US, 80’s tax cuts broke New Deal framework, which rt-wing were intent to destroy, as Dems diddled w/ neolib’sm, And lost to a savage boy seeking to trash his own house.

George Monbiot@georgemonbiot.bsky.social

It's a straightforward relationship: high #inequality leads to the triumph of the far right. It will keep winning until governments deliberately seek to make societies more equal. I'm looking at you, Keir Starmer. This week's column. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

The magnitude of the deception is quite BEYOND the capacity of honest souls even to perceive: Honest souls want to believe in human care, and CANNOT FATHOM that notable ppl can be capable of SUCH depravity: Hitler’s “big enough lie” that no one can question.

Mehdi Hasan@mehdirhasan.bsky.social

We have the most anti-free speech government in modern American history. (And yet, in true Orwellian fashion, they claim to be champions of free speech.)

Noem, channeling the trumpian ambition, wants an *unlimited* prerogative: “Rest of their lives” =“Nothing shall stop us!” This is the ending of Law, and the replacement of politics by an imaginary fiat📌

Jon Cooper@joncooper-us.bsky.social

Migrant detainees should be in a maximum-security El Salvador prison "for the rest of their lives," Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem says — despite a recent CBS News investigation that found more than 75% of those sent to the prison had NO criminal records.

Yes, all these …and if you believe your own lies, you have taken yourself for a fool, a fool who doesn’t know he’s being lied to, and so you are a sadist who lies to the poor fool, and a callous deceiver as well, who thinks there’s nothing wrong with either sadism nor idiocy: So…?

Joanne Freeman@jbf1755.bsky.social

If your response to yesterday’s millions of people marching is that they were all paid operatives…you’re desperate, deluded, and scared. And lying.

Bravo, to this young man📌 He is a light for the future.

Mother Jones@motherjones.com

"Do you want a good government or a country that's in ruins?" This interview was too good not to share in its entirety. So meet Grant, a 15-year-old student from Princeton, New Jersey, who spoke to our reporter at the #HandsOff rally there. He has some thoughts.

Indeed Law is like fences, once enacted they stay put These folks seem to think judges scurry around to plop down some fencing where they want to go Rather than realize the fence was already there but they didn’t want to see it. ‘Inebriated’ doesn’t begin to cover such driving.

Seth Abramson@sethabramson.bsky.social

I don’t even know how to process this much stupidity Every word of the two posts below is nonsense, and either both of these men know that or neither should be allowed to use a fork to eat because they might hurt themselves

FIRST question WHY would Govt officials even be USING a group chat format that IS NOT an official record?📌 ➡️…if not to elude scrutiny!?! The content is egregious, the risk enormous, but the SUBTERFUGE spiting Govt itself is unforgivable, And DISHONORS America📌

Molly Jong-Fast@mollyjongfast.bsky.social

Oh wow, @jeffreygoldberg.bsky.social did it

➡️Putin is the Aggressor with whom Trump Identifies, And so Trump’s head is an open avenue for him. His militant unawareness of anything but his own personal anodyne turns executive duty into vapor, as sycophants clear all impediments: This is not Govt but an overgrown baby nursing.

Timothy Snyder@timothysnyder.bsky.social

Putin’s one and only route to victory is through Trump’s head.

It’s become the “Environmental Production Agency” Slash and burn, we call it, regarding primitive agriculture.

Yes! ‘Uniformity,’ which is ➡️the Rule of Nobody is what Rs slam ‘wokeness’ for, as an *alleged* Dem tactic, while the slammage is an overt R tactic: ➡️EVEN AS Rs succumb the SAME WAY to the Rule of Trump, who IS a Nobody whom they promote as leader: *Their* uniformity means BEING NUMB.

Christopher Webb@cwebbonline.com

Pete Buttigieg breaks down DEI for everyday folks… “The opposite of diversity is uniformity. The opposite of equity is inequity. The opposite of inclusion is exclusion.” @petebuttigieg.bsky.social Our problem: too many value uniformity over inclusion and they’re the ones running the government. 🧵

I discovered it 50y ago in college, went on to Renaissance polyphony, Bach, and onwards… Music captures timelessness, and is a refuge from secular chaos, commercial meaninglessness and clamor. MUCH deeper than video games!

Mar Hicks@histoftech.bsky.social

Every time someone my age says something about “a brainrot trend on TikTok…” I’m compelled to remind Gen X that we were obsessed with Gregorian chant for a year in the 90s. Like we *went to the mall* & *bought CDs of it*. We blasted it in our cars driving to our high schools. This was normal to us🥸

Pertinent📌 …and characteristic!

Dave Troy@davetroy.com

Significant evidence suggests that anti-Tesla protests that encourage physical violence are being driven by bad actors aiming to accelerate violence and martial law. The public should engage in economic boycott and anti-Tesla information operations, but AVOID physical engagement.

If the Trumpian ambition is to ➡️destroy ‘shame,’ replacing it with shamelessness, The Muskian ambition is to ➡️destroy empathy, replacing it with a demotic darwinian survival of the most unscrupulous📌

Brian Tyler Cohen@briantylercohen.bsky.social

"Musk's claim ("the left is supposed to be the party of empathy") perfectly distills the asymmetry in our politics. The left is “supposed to be” empathetic, so that’s the standard it must live up to. The right isn't, so when its leader incites a riot, that’s fine since it meets our expectations."

Imo, Dems hv long failed to respond to deep public woe, Brought by inequity from 80s tax cuts, neo-lib wishful thinking, and offshoring of work: If Dems had fessed up to being asleep at the switch, They’d have more credibility📌

Adam Serwer@adamserwer.bsky.social

American politics makes a lot more sense when you realize that the GOP is afraid of pissing off the GOP base, and the Dems are afraid of pissing off the GOP base, but neither party is afraid of pissing off the Dem base.

Oh my! If the Constitution created an Article III power to be coequal with that of the Executive, …it would be ‘unconstitutional’! 🙄

Acyn@acyn.bsky.social

When asked if the Administration will comply with court orders on fired federal workers, WH Press Secretary Leavitt says the orders are unconstitutional: You cannot have a low level district court judge filing an injunction to usurp the executive authority of the President…

“Art of the Deal” was ghost-written by Tony Schwarz, Who was stunned in ‘16 when Trump claimed credit Jane Mayer’s piece soon after told how Schwarz saw Trump as ‘a black hole’ My cartoon:

Accurate.

Dems (and all commentators) ought to point out the tactic *the replacement of politics by deception* Which in itself destroys any factual ground: This must be called what it is: A ‘Great Replacement’ method, flooding the earth with lunacy.
