Just to give an example of what I mean, for over two decades the CPUSA published New Masses, a general audience-oriented magazine of cultural criticism. Many ups and downs, but consistently published amazing artists and left an indelible imprint on modernism and mass culture.
I think the challenge of Jacobin is they are a part of the left that has ceded “culture” to liberalism, and don’t take it seriously. Which in addition to being bad politics, means you are very susceptible to dumb takes.
Looking forward to reading this impeccably-timed new book by @abbieboggs.bsky.social
I gave a talk on Paul Robeson to my kid’s fourth grade class once, and made the mistake of playing Robeson singing “Joe Hill,” and for the rest of the class, all the kids wanted to know was the precise details of how Joe Hill was killed. 🙄
Happy Birthday Joe Hill, folk poet, songwriter, union man. Born this day 1879 he would spend a life time fighting the oppressor. He was murdered by firing squad on Nov. 19, 1915. seditionist.uk/compendium/j...

Our language has been completely warped by Big Tech's algorithms, from a generation that's grown up saying "unalive", to the way everyone's censored themselves talking about the Cornell rapists. It's time to fight back against billionaire control of free speech. www.anildash.com/2026/10/06/k...
On our tour of umpteenth german musical establishments, I paused dramatically and said, "but on Wednesday, after going through Leipzig, Berlin, Mannheim, and Bayreuth, we get to...Esterháza!" But there is no reaction because they are normal people who vaguely know there is a composer named Haydn.
Update: I’m looking for a recording of a singspiel (Hiller’s Die Jagd, in 1769) that the textbook swears was a huge hit and that everyone knew this one lied from it in particular. Best I have is a live video recording of an outdoor performance on YouTube, in Latvian.

I know that I overdo the "everything starts with McCarthyism" thing, but also, if you want to understand what Senator Eric Schmitt was attempting to do there, I strongly recommend Nathan Glazer's analysis of it, back in 1953. www.commentary.org/articles/nat...

I’ve taught 18th century music surveys so many times in my life, but we switched to a new textbook which is possibly the nerdiest, least undergrad-friendly text one could write, and it’s really kicking my ass.
