If I were a Bolsonaro supporter, I'd be upset that he fled the country. Why support a politician who simply flees when they lose and it calls into question the motivations behind the candidacy in the first place? Even his own party has now accepted Lula's win. www.theguardian.com/world/2026/o...

70 percent of the internet was vulnerable yesterday to very bad security flaws inside a coding language. Turns out, *one volunteer* is mostly responsible for maintaining that code & helping push updates. Yesterday Ondřej Surý saved the internet. So I called him up www.theatlantic.com/technology/2...

NEW: A bird flu outbreak has been raging uncontrolled on a Utah mink farm for two months. Flu experts fear it could spark a devastating human pandemic. But officials haven’t acted — instead prioritizing the financial interests of the fur trade.

As I've "grown up" & become more "adult," I've been replacing furniture & getting rid of old stuff I don't use or need. I wish I knew who was taking the things I was leaving outside my house because I'd love for them to take my couch, too! 😂 Glad people are finding a use for the table & chairs.

One chair I put outside because my adorable academic co-pilot with whiskers decimated the fabric with her claws. I wish she'd be that aggressive with the scratching post! Someone took it before the refuse collectors got to it last week.

Woke up to an article acceptance this morning! 🎉 This paper is a class paper I did with my students at Miami University when I was there as a VAP from 2022-25. In my last semester, students in my Economic Statecraft course chose to do a survey project, which we received funding for and fielded. /1

The current venue (I'll share later) provided the best peer review feedback I've ever received as a scholar. The reviews helped me learn new things, and I was able to improve the presentation and analysis of the survey results (I've even incorporated some of these insights into other projects). /10

While the survey design isn't perfect and there are of course lots of room for improvement, the paper's contribution is more in what it demonstrates than how it demonstrates it. I'm excited to share this project in print, and I hope to develop other papers from the survey data in the coming months.

I'm not a survey methodologist by any stretch of the imagination. Because of the short time in a semester, I overlooked a lot of things. If I could do it again, I would probably have tweaked the survey to make it experimental and also pre-registered it. Despite those limitations... /8

I still think the paper has a lot of interesting things to say. It was tough to get people to accept a local level analysis of tariff use, and I sent the paper to four different venues, each time it got rejected. I will say the rejections were very helpful in shaping the paper. /9

While the theory, methods, and statistical analysis of the survey is mainly me, the students' contribution is front in center in the paper's introduction, in the survey instruments, and in the literature review. /6

Because of the students' immense contribution to the project, each will be listed as a coauthor after me on the project, highlighting their integral role in the paper. I'm really proud of them for doing such great work, and I want to do more of this kind of work in my courses in the future. /7

They designed a short survey that captured demographic and political data about respondents and asked 10 questions. The students also helped me with the IRB, too, and each student had to do the necessary training as part of the course. /4

Once approved, we fielded the survey, got back the results, and each student chose a topic connected to the literature review. I incorporated the students' research into the literature review and many of the ideas we discussed in class. /5

I wanted students (25 of them) to have a research experience that wasn't simply writing a class paper but allowed students to work collectively to produce the survey and do literature reviews for something we could publish somewhere. The survey the students designed was pretty good. /2

The Menard Family Center for Democracy at Miami University graciously supported the survey. At the time, there was a lot of fear and concern about the tariffs the Trump Administration was proposing, and students wanted to examine Ohioans’ feelings about tariffs. /3

I don't understand the Ramaswamy campaign's push to run that ad and some politicians glorifying it. It's not a bold move or brave at all. Taking a person's personal trauma and using it as a political weapon is gross. And why would anyone be impressed by endorsement from a mom like that.

I just don't think someone who finds the use of this ad as permissible should be governor or hold any political office. We can't say that the victims of the abuse are simply "liars" when the state didn't think so. Everyone regardless of their politics should be condemning this ad.

You need to fly to Kroger or the mall in your air-powered Camry or Civic? Am I the only one who thinks this is a huge disaster in the making? People can’t even parallel park or park between two white lines in the parking lot. How will they be able to descend to 5000 feet? Exhausting! 😂
