I saw this a few days ago and it is fantastic. And really worth seeing with an audience - especially in Harlem at the Magic Johnson! Go to one of these screenings if you have the chance.

Once Upon a Time in Harlem is a film that every New Yorker should see — and this weekend you can, at no cost. We partnered with the filmmakers to offer free screenings this Saturday and Sunday at the Lincoln Center, Film Forum, and Magic AMC in Harlem. Go to on.nyc.gov/seeharlem to reserve a seat.

I will be attending the Sō Percussion performance of Steve Reich's "Drumming" next Wednesday at @92ndstreety.bsky.social, which should be a great concert. But charging an $11 "In-Person Event Fee" is absolute bullshit! The fee is mentioned nowhere until you are about to check out. Shameful.

1933: Prohibition ends, and the proprietor of 25, a 42-year-old bar where Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, and others used to gather, is inspired: "With BEER as my sail, and all my CUSTOMERS as crew, I am going to pilot the GOOD SHIP '25' through prosperity for the next forty-two years."

Based in the barrios of San Juan, with visits to Loiza (pictured), Mayagüez, Ponce. Meet musicians, historians.

Just a reminder: This traitorous MFer would still be in prison if he hadn't taken a pardon from his co-conspirator.

In March 1727, the coastal kingdom of Ouidah let out its sacred serpents to protect its northern border. But the power of the snake-god proved ineffective against the invading Dahomean soldiers, who slew the sacred serpents with their swords. www.africanhistoryextra.com/p/the-swords...

This is true.

I've been immersed in research on Reconstruction in Lousiana and it's a very difficult truth to absorb that the white terrorist movement in the South was among the most successful terrorist movements in global history. Took 10 years but it won a total & complete victory through murder and atrocity.

The best way to make your prose more smooth and natural is to read it out loud. I don't mean read it "out loud" to yourself, I mean literally speak the words out loud into the room. The speech center in your brain is separate from the area that processes written language.

A longtime devotee goes back through more than four decades of Hassell’s music and talks with co-producer Jeff Rona about the ‘City’ sessions, the self-sampling, and the posthumous ‘Music Is Invisible.’ The Tonearm’s Blake Leyh has skin in the game. Life and Death in Jon Hassell’s Fourth World:

Postmambo is at La Factoría in Viejo San Juan on a night when the music is so old school that the first number is Chano Pozo’s “El Pin Pin” (1945), celebrating the Allied victory over Japan: “Pin, pin, cayó Berlin, Pon, pon, cayó japón.”

Remember when T***p ordered a bunch of pianos for his hotel then stiffed the vendor, putting him out of business?

Sarah Burris@sarahburris.bsky.social

Y'all I just caught the Kennedy Center claiming it isn't closing while telling vendors it's closing and now they're selling all of their Steinway pianos www.alternet.org/alternet-exc...

They’re not dropping bombs on Cuba, but this is siege warfare. They don’t care if there’s a single Cuban left alive if they can grab the territory and the minerals. All of the 8 million or so left on the island will be traumatized for life as a result of what they’ve experienced just this year.

This is one of the most amazing books I have ever been honored to work on. Around 40 years of oral & documentary history about Selassie's visit to Jamaica and the Caribbean which transformed the place of Rastafarians in Jamaican society. A historic volume.

I keep thinking about this. I wonder who slept under that beautiful quilt, and what it was like when they pulled the solar system over their shoulders at night to protect them from the Iowa winter cold.

Maria Popova@mariapopova.bsky.social

In the autumn of 1883, a national paper reported that "an Iowa woman has spent seven years embroidering the solar system on a quilt." Ellen Harding Baker used her stunning quilt to teach astronomy in an era when women could not attend college www.themarginalian.org/2018/12/06/e...
