Cruciverbal folk, can you help? Does anyone have to hand something that clearly explains same-sidedness? I am working with a group of new compilers and it's a concept that is tricky to define. 'Perceives taste and smell? (6)' = SENSES is the clue that prompted the discussion.

Thanks to those who have replied so far. All helpful and, yes, I am familiar with the shared etymological root argument. The issue with the clue in question is that there is no shared root for perceives, taste and smell - yet it clearly feels same-sided.

My turn to ask the counsel of fellow cruciverbalists. I was astounded to discover today, via a test-solver, that PH is not in the dictionaries for public house. Yet PH, frequently clued by 'bar' or 'local', has often been used in published puzzles. Is it acceptable despite no dictionary support?
