If we treat it as diegetic, then firstly it's really weird that Dedra would play the music from one of the most traumatic moments in her career. Then again, it was also the place where she fell in love with her fashy sweetheart.

But aside from the character implications, cultural appropriation is what empire (with a small e) does - take meaningful traditions, strip them of their context, sand off the edges, and repackage them for mass consumption.

However, the track I really want to talk about is this: youtu.be/RKxvzO9fYMs It's a lounge jazz (lounge jizz?) version of the opening theme. I thought it was quite funny at first, but as others pointed out, we now know this theme as the Ferrix funeral march, so it's arguably distasteful.
