Both Prime Time award winners!

The Georgian Lords@georgianlords.bsky.social

Two such different politicians, both hugely influential at Court (and in government) sharing a death day: John Hervey, Lord Hervey (d. 1743) and Frederick North, Lord North, by then 2nd earl of Guilford (d. 1792). Hervey didn't live to inherit the earldom of Bristol; North got his for just 2 years.

James Callaghan is the only person to have held all 4 Great Offices of State. PM during difficult economic times (1976-79), his was the most recent government brought down by a vote of no confidence. Not a Welshman, but he represented Cardiff South in Parliament for 42 years!

David Lloyd George (PM 1916-22) was a leading figure in the pre-WWI radical Liberal government and was PM for the 2nd half of the Great War and its aftermath. Not a Cardiff man specifically, but he was the UK's first Welsh PM & the only one not to have spoken English growing up.

In Part 3, Lord North faces the fight of his life: the #AmericanRevolution Turns out, holding on to a global empire thousands of miles away with an angry George III breathing down your neck is impossible, and North's response to rebellion goes from weak to confused to farcical. #FreeLordNorth

Prime Ministers are dumb! Who would want to listen to an episode about stuffy Prime Ministers, when you can listen to Abram tell me about the "Prime Ministers of Rock", the Beatles. Don't ask me what I want it for (Ah, Mr. Wilson) If you don't want to pay some more (Ah, Mr. Heath) bit.ly/4v2xCA7

bit.lyThe Beatles | Prime Factors - Ranking UK Prime MinistersThey might not have been bigger than Jesus, but they certainly were bigger than Robert Walpole, William Pitt, or Harold Wilson: they were "The Beatles". In this very special episode, Abram takes the m...

Politicians have some unexpected duties... Within hours of tearing lumps out of each other at #PMQs, the #PrimeMinister and Leader of the Opposition (and both Speakers!) made a 60-mile dash to Kent to attend the installation of Sarah Mullaly as the 106th #ArchbishopOfCanterbury

A great read! (which we used for our episodes) More generally, the @histparl.bsky.social project is an amazing resource, filled with fascinating stuff which we'd highly recommend!

If you can't wait for that, there is, of course, a substantial entry on North as an MP by John Brooke in our @histparl.bsky.social Commons 1754-90 volumes, covering his 36 years in the lower House as Member for Banbury. www.histparl.ac.uk/volume/1754-...

With amazing timing, we've just reached a position where the majority of our listeners now come from inside the US. For a British podcast about British history, this is a badge of hono(u)r!

🔥Why not "remember, remember" the 5th of November by relistening to our completely serious, not-at-all-silly episode from last year on the #GunpowderPlot? 🎆🧨 Learn more about #GuyFawkes, the near-destruction of Parliament, and stupid in-jokes we keep reusing... #BonfireNight

The most important day in Prime Time's history? Maybe. It's John Wilkes's 300th birthday!🎂🥳🥂🎈 He's become a favourite character, and here's our new episode on him, giving the ultimate run-down of his life: smut, duels, wit, riots, satanic club and more👀 WILKES AND LIBERTY!

BIG NEWS 😱🚨 OK, not really, but we are updating our #primeminister episode thumbnails. We firmly believe that “there’s no such thing as a bad idea, so say yes to every single idea” so if you can think of any fun visual gags to add to old episodes, do let us know! #thecatstays #history #politics

New episode! 🚨 In the #RottenBoroughs, #elections were up for sale and MPs were elected to #Parliament by small handfuls of landowners and their friends. Find out more (including some actually funny stories!) about British #politics greatest historical corruption #history #podcast #georgians

New episode! 🚨 He was Rockingham's secretary, so far from a #primeminister himself, but #EdmundBurke 's political writings are some of the most significant in British history. We pause our narrative to take a look at his impact on how politics works today #history #podcast #georgians #politics
