Adoptees of Bluesky🥚, Ashley Smith was an adoptee. Today marks 19 years since 19-year-old Ashley Smith died in a segregation cell at Grand Valley Institution after being subjected to conditions of torture and isolation.

Senator Kim Pate@kpateonthehill.bsky.social

On this day, we remember Ashley Smith and acknowledge all who have experienced and are experiencing unimaginable violence and harm within the prison system. Let us honour their memories and voices by creating a system that truly protects people and that is more just for all.

This #WorldMentalHealthDay, we must recognize that improving mental health requires more than raising awareness. It is imperative that we address the social and economic conditions that dictate people’s well-being.

Fascinating of who exactly was in this institution hasn't been widely reported. 🥚 MOTHER AND BABY HOMES COMMISSION OF INVESTIGATION FINAL REPORT 30 October 2020 Chapter 15: The Tuam Children’s Home

Taken from his mother after her imprisonment, adopted at 9, he ran away at 13 and was on the road by 15.🥚

Stompin’ Tom’s life was rooted in his mother’s story of poverty, imprisonment & child welfare intervention. He didn’t speak about it for years because, he says, people “don’t want to hear that.” Hers is one of hundreds of thousands of mothers’ stories still untold. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pxgu...

Smith describes Ireland’s Magdalen laundries & its “architecture of containment” as a vast network of interlinked institutions. Canada had a similar architecture—a network of institutions & systems of confinement. The Andrew Mercer Reformatory was but one part of it. www.youtube.com/watch?v=r14y...

www.independentpanel.truthrecoveryni.co.uk My role as a co-chair of the Truth Recovery Independent Panel is at an end. We published our report yesterday with an event for Victims-Survivors. It was humbling to share the day with them. The report can be read at this link.

Today is Prisoners’ Justice Day, an international day of remembrance to honour those who have died in custody and a day of action to advance the rights of incarcerated people. 1/3

What they don't mention are the women and girls who died there, or the babies born to incarcerated mothers and taken for adoption.

Before it was Toronto's trendiest neighborhood, Liberty Village was home to the Toronto Central Prison and the Andrew Mercer Reformatory for Women; institutions built to hold the people the city didn't want to see. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Cmi...

🥚Shame on Canada and others!👇

🧵Canada has had NO comparable Truth Recovery Independent Panel to investigate maternity homes, reformatories, Good Shepherd Institutions, refuges, rescue homes, asylums, industrial and training schools, and other institutions in which women and girls were confined. www.tiktok.com/@newscoolfm/...

Replying to @kpateonthehill.bsky.social

Research has consistently demonstrated that poverty, housing insecurity, untreated mental health challenges, addiction, childhood trauma, and a lack of community supports are among the strongest predictors of criminal legal system involvement. 6/8

Access to prison records was previously limited under claims that the YCJA protected the records of girls under 18. My group and I challenged this barrier and were successful. Learn more below.🥚👇

We worked hard to break down this barrier. Three years. Multiple IPC orders. Dismissed reconsideration requests. The YCJA does not retroactively restrict access to records solely because an individual was under 18 while incarcerated at Mercer. PO-4827-R canlii.ca/t/kl2n3

@adopteereading.bsky.social A category for adoptees with a carceral birth, perhaps? Laureen Pittman and Deborah Jiang-Stein are both adoptees who have published books. Hopefully, mine will join them soon.🥚 Great website - thank you!👇
