Tier list of technically correct observations: 1. Underestimate of quantity 2. Contextually irrelevant detail 3. Misapplied categorisation schema 4. Vacuous tautology 5. Overly specific conclusion 6. Remarking on absence 7. Bizarre hypothetical 8. Unappliable moral lesson

@curatrix-ribston.bsky.social reminded me it's been like a year since I've spent a couple of hours knocking out a micro-RPG in Tumblr post form, so here, have this. As always, it's a stupid dice trick with a silly narrative frame; I think it might have legs, though! www.tumblr.com/prokopetz/83...

One of the more baffling tendencies I keep bumping into in playtest feedback on my games is the propensity of many GMs to treat player choices as a kind of randomiser. (1/3)

(2/3) I get these very strange (to me) reports of how a thing played out, and looking into it further reveals the GM was going out of their way to oblige the players to make critical decisions on the basis of as little actionable information as possible, basically using their choice as a coin flip.

(3/3) A lot of the stuff in my games that's like "no, players can see everything at all times unless the rules explicitly say otherwise, including the NPCs' stat blocks and the GM's dice rolls" is motivated by pushing back against that tendency.

For all its flaws, one thing Persona 3's Social Links do that none of its successor titles have had the stones to attempt ever again is make the protagonist objectively a bad influence.

Half the time when you forge a bond with someone you're actively making them worse, which is unexplored territory in most games of the type, and it's always disappointing to be reminded how far the series has backed off from it.

We as a society need to stop making sexy versions of classic Hallowe'en monsters lithe and hairless. Give that werewolf some meat on his bones. Make Frankenstein's monster as jacked as he is in the book. Give Dracula his fuckass moustache back.

Growing up watching stuff like "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe" really had me expecting that I'd be encountering more things in my adult life which could aptly be described as "wretched".

Loosely inspired by this post [ bsky.app/profile/prok... ], though adding the described playbooks was more work than I could reasonably put into a two-hour game. I have a vague idea playbook abilities would be fuelled by held cards in some way if anyone else wants to take a shot at that, feel free!

Powered By the Apocalypse game where the playbooks are Flunky, Toady, Minion, Stooge, Lackey, Henchman, and Goon.

It's pretty far from being the WORST accessibility fuckup I've ever encountered, but I'm a little bit fascinated by the crosswalk a couple of blocks from my house that has a curb cut on one end but not the other. It feels like one of those reality-preempting-the-metaphor things.

(This is the same neighbourhood that has a prominently posted sign indicating that Wheelchair Accessible Buses Stop Here on a bus stop that's just a concrete island with no sidewalks or pedestrian footpaths actually connected to it, so you can see where this becomes a Theme.)

The human brain's propensity to pick up new kinks via repeated exposure must suck if you're one of those people whose kink is being made to participate in kinks you don't have.

Many will cite the backflipping werewolf as their favourite element of the classic "Back Street's Back" music video, but I admit I'm partial to the "sexy mummy" that's just a regular mummy wearing a leather bondage harness, and each time the refrain hits "am I sexual" it cuts to the fucking mummy.

Therapy is a fantastic tool for going from having a problem whose nature and implications you don't understand to having a well-understood problem you're materially unable to constructively address.

One of these days I want to run a game of "Wisher, Theurgist, Fatalist" where the default stub of an RPG underlying the meta stuff swapped for a bare-bones Mentzer Basic type framework, and the WTF layer is basically used to gamify arguing about what a "real" OSR game is.

Basically I just want to see how the "rulings, not rules!" ethos of kick-the-party's-ass dungeon crawling plays out in a framework where everyone at the table has at least some degree of authority to make rulings and there are formal procedures for deposing the GM and taking their place.

"Telling a story is not necessarily the goal of every TTRPG" is how you piss off casual players. "The Forge was wrong: even if telling a story IS a TTRPG's principal goal, the activities of play are not necessarily identical with the goals of play" is how you piss off people who blog about TTRPGs.

A lot of people get really upset when you tell them that “tell a story” is not a necessary goal of TTRPG play.

One of the benefits of working from home is that I can freely read the shit you people post out loud in order to verify that it makes as little sense as I think it does.

Environmentalist JRPG for the modern age where the Evil Overlord has scorched the sky and poisoned the land and turned the waters to purple goo, and the twist is there was never any plan to corrupt anything – all that was just the side effects of building the fantasy equivalent of an AI data centre.

"Isn't this just Final Fantasy VII" no, Final Fantasy VII is an old-school environmentalist JRPG where the baddies are fantasy oil executives. The particulars of the allegory matter!

I like that "Pacific Rim" textually establishes two characters can be drift compatible not out of fundamental similarity, but because they've so obsessively catalogued everything that annoys each about the other, they can perfectly predict what the other is going to say and do to piss them off next.

If there's one part of Warhammer 40 000's worldbuilding that truly shows the franchise's age, it's gotta be the Adeptus Mechanicus. They're still basically founded in 1980s stereotypes about computer nerds [...] (1/2)

(2/2) [...] while in 2026 we've seen the reality of living in a society whose vital infrastructures are utterly at the mercy of a bunch of out-of-touch technophile plutocrats who've turned a child's understanding of science into a substitute religion, and it's *so much worse*.

The whole idea of the tech establishment as this secrecy-shrouded cult of knowledge where the rank and file are mere functionaries operating devices they don't understand via rote exalted as ritual while only the elite actually know their shit, when the reality has proven to be the exact opposite!

I feel like the folks who are like "this would make a fun one-shot!" every time I propose some really fucked up tabletop RPG framework are wilfully refusing to engage with the premise.

"This would be a fun toy to poke at for a couple of hours, then discard and never think about again" you sit your ass down and Ponder The Implications of a full campaign working that way.

One unanticipated side effect of having a moderately widely-read blog is that anxious weirdos are constantly DMing me asking for permission to do or be or think things, which feels like it would be a tremendously exploitable position to be in if I was even a little bit so inclined.

"System neutral" in the sense that this adventure module is extremely obviously written for Mentzer Basic, but the author is trying very hard to be good and not take a dogmatic stance on which particular set of grotesque house rules your table ought to be using.

Ultra-high-lethality OSR dungeon crawler where each dungeon level has its own character creation chapter for rolling up a new PC for surviving party members to recruit when you die on that level. Backgrounds, species, and even whole character classes may be unique to particular dungeon levels.

We are of course contemplating the sort of OSR game where the complete mechanics for a given background/species/class/etc. can be set forth in a quarter-page writeup, so each dungeon level can detail its unique character creation options fairly compactly; attempt this in modern D&D at your own risk!

Media where it's actually, genuinely unclear whether it's a kink thing gets funnier the more esoteric the kink in question is. It's easy to establish plausible deniability for stuff like sweat or feet, but keeping it ambiguous whether the author is bent for eye trauma takes a deft touch.

It's essential that a fucked up vampire be fucked up in at least one way that's completely unrelated to the fact of them being a vampire, which is actually quite difficult to achieve because vampirehood is a cogent metaphor for so many flavours of upfuckery.

Top five red flags in video game soundtracks: 1. Electric guitar in otherwise analogue soundscape 2. Minor key reprise of protagonist's motif 3. Somebody just going fucking nuts on the harpsichord 4. Every instrumental voice drops out except one; +1 if it's like a music box 5. Backwards violins

Religious worldbuilding hack #137: prepend pretty much any English noun to pretty much any word denoting a degree of familial relatedness (e.g., mother, brother, cousin, etc.) and refuse to explain.

Hey, so the test results came back, and it turns out you have a severe deficiency of the indefinable essence that gives people value. Yeah, no, MATERIALLY you're a fully realised person with real hopes and dreams, but ONTOLOGICALLY you have roughly the same moral worth as a moderately clever gerbil.

This has no particular bearing on your relationships with other people, because they can't perceive your intangible essence and are obliged to judge you on the evidence of their senses, but you'll know. Oh, you'll know.

"After everything you've done, why should we trust you now?" "Because I have a pathological need to make sure things are done correctly even to my own detriment, and you're fucking this up so badly I'm in physical pain."
