It is very much worth a read/re-read. There's a serious way in which seeing that get published by NYT in that season felt like a real win (there is a funny side as well, if you know that Mariame famously doesn't like to write, even though she has released several more amazing books since then).

My 80 year old dad is so upset about the way protestors are being attacked so we got into a conversation about defunding the police & I sent him this piece by @prisonculture.bsky.social. Realized others might want to revisit it too. www.nytimes.com/2020/06/12/o...

Cis-heteronormativity has never been the default for humanity. It has always been maintained through violence and power structures. Pride is a reminder that the fullness of humanity cannot be extinguished no matter how hard oppressors try. Pride is a rebellion against oppression. #HappyPride

Why does God harden Pharaoh's heart? What is this staff of the God(s)? Who is getting circumsized, who's feet (ha!) are being touched, and who is Zipporah's Bridgegroom of Blood? What does it mean for God to hear us? And where does God's penis enter the story? Listen now to find out!

Maundy Thursday is a reminder that the same Jesus that lowered himself to wash feet, is the same Jesus invoked to celebrate the "deportation" of innocence to death camps. It's ironic that so many Christians will celebrate the resurrection of life this weekend while having worshipped death all week

Any time I being up Nazis being a Christian movement, I always get someone saying "Hitler wasn't a Christian" as a means to discredit the statement. Christofascism isn't about being Christian, is about using Christian supremacy to gain power and carry out the logical conclusion of that theology.

In light of all these tariffs, now would be a really good time to develop a sense of class consciousness. Trust me, you have a lot more in common with the people you look down on than the people who look down on you.

Those who support oppression do not have to speak about it when they hold the power. They can just have their leaders speak and watch harm grow. Those who oppose oppression can choose silence and still personally oppose the harm. But, in doing so, they speak the same words as those who support it.

If we cannot speak out without punching down on marginalized groups, we should choose to not speak. Comparing politicians to children, using the r slur, or whatever, we are saying they are on the level of that marginalized group and that group is not worthy of dignity, respect, or equality.

If all we needed was better translations of the Bible or correct theological interpretation, things would be easy. Unfortunately, ideology determines theology and ideology is much more difficult to change.
