the only moral response to successful reform is a reversion to the status quo ante. But most, sometimes all, of the negative consequences are not punishments. If the trust between two parties is damaged by wrongdoing, the wrongdoer’s personal growth does nothing to repair that trust,

and the rebuilding cannot be done by the wrongdoer alone. Insisting the wronged party has a moral obligation to spend time and effort to rebuild that trust, that they must recreate the status quo ante, is absurd. We can give specific reasons: They are in a different place than they were before,

If we accept that the ideal goal of punishment is to reform the punished, this distinction is of great importance. If a lawyer behaves unethically, a suspended license is a punishment. The damage to their reputation, loss of trust from peers and clients, etc, is not a punishment.

This is not something being done TO the wrongdoer, or BY anyone, but a result of their actions. If we accept the rehabilitative purpose of punishment, punishing someone once they’ve reformed would be immoral, and so if we treat all negative consequences as punishment,

There is a cultural tendency to treat all negative consequences as punishment, which is mistaken. Punishment is when something negative is done to a person in response to their actions (usually with a desired outcome), not any negative consequence whatsoever.

People on Bsky will really be like, “You believe in building a solidarity movement? That pales in effectiveness to my strategy, attacking my own coalition to win over conservative swing voters” and then not win over any conservative swing voters

You can give them everything they want, but the mere option to do something else is treated as an attack. The important thing is not that this is for them, but that it is EXCLUSIVELY for them. We saw this with the freakout over DnD changing the alignment rules. If you want all orcs to be evil and

a non-binary character was a source of rage for anti-woke right. Why does this game let me romance someone of the same gender? Why does this restaurant have a vegan option? This category is similar to the previous, and they overlap, but there is an important distinction.

5. “This doesn’t cater exclusively to my preferences.” Given the previous category, you might think it’s enough for a game’s character design page to allow you to make the manliest he-man character, or the bustiest centerfold. But the fact that Forza Horizons 6 and Starfield allow players to make

In fact, nearly every game with a female lead has been attacked because they look like normal people and not porn stars. Being on right wing social media means believing that this character is so hideous and manly that the studio is trying to attack the concept of masculinity itself.

“Cracker Barrel” in the middle. Somehow, this was so horribly woke that a sitting US congressman complained about it. The arguments as to why this is woke were facially absurd, but it boils down to a deeply held belief among the anti-woke right:

“The things I like represent my cultural values; not giving me the things I like is an attack on me and my values.” It is not enough to simply dislike a choice, the fact that it is a choice they dislike means it is inherently political and illegitimate. We can find no shortage of this argument in

4. “This doesn’t cater to my preferences” The recent right wing freakout over the Cracker Barrel logo change is a good segue from the previous category. The new logo was an example of the boring trend of simplified corporate branding. It was a sideways yellow barrel shape with the words

Another example is how corporations regularly pander to whatever they think is popular (e.g. at some point every mascot has had sunglasses and a skateboard). But if they change the mascot to appeal to what they think the left wants, then suddenly it’s woke coercion. Corporations chase trends,

but when that trend is to the left it is treated as censorship or extortion. There was no public pressure to change the green M&M’s shoes yet the right insisted this was something the left did rather than some random marketing executive chasing increased sales revenue.

and always have been, true of social media in its entirety. Not only has the right gleefully engaged in this behavior for decades, but everything from influencer rivalries, to sports arguments, to video game drama has resulted in identical behavior. My point here isn’t to justify this behavior.

Rather, treating it as a unique to the left makes actually dealing with it impossible, as any solution would require fundamental changes to how social media operates. And, as we have seen time and again, any attempt to curb this behavior that includes when the right does it is vehemently opposed.

never attended them nor would have even heard about them.) Further examples include “When did Rage Against the Machine and Bruce Springsteen get political?” or “Why are kids shows being preachy?” There is obviously no way to stop these complaints.

3. “It’s a problem when YOU do it” A lot of attacks on “wokeness” are attacks on behavior that occurs across and outside of the political spectrum, but since the left is doing it, it’s a unique problem and pathology of the left. Most of the complaints about online cancel culture are,

We saw this a lot with “The War on Christmas.” Things that had been common for well over a century, like saying “Happy Holidays” or abbreviating it to Xmas were suddenly treated as novel attacks on Christianity. Most of the complaints about HR and sensitivity training fall into this category.

People who would have twiddled their thumbs until the one hour seminar was over are suddenly furious at the woke indoctrination.. (And while there were some silly corporate seminars several years ago, I’d point out that the vast majority of people complaining about them fall into category 1; they

want you to say mother and father anymore. The specific technical language choice does not affect any of these people, and they would have never have even come across it in regular life, but they insist this is something the left is doing to them.

The complaints of this kind can be rephrased in a way that shows how absurd they are. “An academic at a conference I didn’t attend for a cause I don’t believe in used jargon I don’t like.” “An ad on a platform I don’t use meant for a demographic I’m not in used a spokesperson I don’t find appealing"

We see this also with all the complaints about “activist language.” To give an example from a few months ago, a bill in New York state uses the term “gestating parent” and “non-gestating parent” instead of “mother” and “father.” In addition to trans and non-binary folk, lesbian couples

would both be mothers, surrogacy and IVF create scenarios where being pregnant and being the mother don’t neatly overlap, etc. Since the relevant aspect of the bill is which parent is pregnant, this works for its intended purpose. But right wingers turned around and insisted that the left doesn't

The entire complaint is that one of the tiktok influencers who did a sponsored post for them was trans. That’s it. That’s the entire “controversy.” But most of the people complaining about this weren’t on tiktok, and those who were wouldn’t have seen her posts.

1. “I’m mad that someone told me about this.” This category covers things that 1) do not affect their lives at all and 2) they would never have even come across if not for a right wing media ecosystem telling them to get mad about it. A major example is the Bud Light freakout.
