In January 2024 I got a one-line email from a woman I didn't know: "Jimmie Duncan an innocent man on death row is looking to get into contact with you." I've been working on the story ever since. Here it is, finally - a @motherjones.com / @bolts.bsky.social feature: boltsmag.org/the-human-co...

boltsmag.orgThe Human Cost of Jeff Landry’s Drive to Resume Executions - BoltsChris Duncan’s death sentence—built on the testimony of two discredited doctors—illustrates just how faulty the system can be.

NEW: Do you remember Chris Duncan? He spent 30+ years on death row in Louisiana, convicted with junk science from doctors later revealed to have created a bite mark on victim. He was found innocent by a judge last year. Now the judge is running to take over the DA office that prosecuted Duncan.

boltsmag.orgAfter Finding a Man on Death Row Innocent, a Judge Wants to Lead the Office That Tried Him - BoltsChris Duncan spent decades in prison based on the junk science of since-discredited doctors. Voters in his Northeast Louisiana hometown could elect the judge who freed him as their DA.

The LA city attorney office's duties are complex, hugely consequential, and little understood. No attorney comes in having already done every aspect of the job – or even most of them!

LA's deeply unpopular city attorney was voted out in the primary, which hasn't happened in nearly 100 years – setting up a battle btw Marissa Roy, who wants to significantly beef up the office's public rights work, & longtime LA prosecutor John McKinney, who wants to get tougher on misdemeanor crime

I spoke to @psfrench.bsky.social for this great piece, flagging the tension inherent in the City Attorney’s charge to defend the City when it harms people while also seeking justice for residents. At the end of the day, you have to pick a side: LA deserves someone who will stand with its people.

The mayoral race has all the headlines, but one of the starkest choices for Angelenos is further downballot: the race for city attorney. From enforcing tenants' rights to policing homelessness, this office matters matters on all sorts of things. Learn more in our new Bolts reporting!

For years, Alaska officials prosecuted (& persecuted) a community of American Samoans in the city of Whittier, threatening them with years in prison for the crime of voting. You may have read about this when we covered it in Bolts earlier this year. HUGE NEWS: Alaska just dropped all charges.

After years of hunger strikes and litigation, survivors of solitary in California passed the Mandela Act to restrict isolation. But the governor vetoed it and told prison officials to make their own reforms. @psfrench.bsky.social reports how they’re now backtracking on even those minor reforms:

To this day, one of the most unbelievable facts we’ve ever published in @boltsmag.org: Over a 40-year period, *80* percent of death row convictions in Louisiana have ended up getting reversed.

Big in Louisiana today: State Supreme Court upheld decision vacating the conviction of Chris Duncan, who spent 26 years on death row claiming innocence. Context: 80% of people on Louisiana death row have been exonerated; this conviction hinged on discredited doctors. We reported on case here:
