I’m been victim-blamed over both SA and chronic illness and it seems so obvious the vitriol is desperately propping up a just-world fallacy in which terrible tragedies only strike deserving bad people. Casting blame is an escape from feeling real empathy or facing their own vulnerability.

One of the big findings in my research is that people invested in disbelieving victims are not swayed by evidence. Just like other issues of misinformation, they cherry pick irrelevant details to allow them to continue to believe whatever they want.
