My lab engineer was veeery busy today. Why you ask? Well early Sunday morning a storm blew a corrugated metal roof into a substation causing a power outage.

The power in the building our lab is in was out briefly. Lab equipment does not like power outages at all. So today everything had to be turned back on and tested. The room ventilation, gloveboxes, vacuum pumps, computers, etc. etc.

Zu den geleakten E-Mails der AfD will ich deutlich sagen: Es mangelt nicht an Erkenntnissen über die AfD. Es mangelt am politischen Willen, endlich Konsequenzen daraus zu ziehen.

With the final grapes processed I checked my spreadsheet: I harvested over 30kg of grapes from my allotment garden since August (+ some that were eaten on site and didn't make it to the scale).

Yesterday I picked the last of the garden grapes (ca. 7.5kg), some peppermint and some colourful runner beans. The weather has turned much colder and wetter, but the garden is still providing.

Astonishing amount of fruit! Very grateful to the previous allotmenteer who planted these grape vines. Roughly 50/50 split between blue and yellow grapes. I am glad both varieties did not ripen at the same time. Not sure how I would have coped with so much sweet abundance 😬 bsky.app/profile/pv-p...

Time to turn this batch of my grape harvest into something storable! I have weighed it now and apparently I currently have 6,25 kg of grapes in my kitchen. Let's go!

Ended up with many little jars full of golden jelly. I am evidently too lazy to make sure all the labels are clearly removed. So some jars of jelly are dressed up as tomato paste, mustard or olives. 😆

Recently, I have been reading several thesis drafts from master and PhD students. So I am once again thinking about active and passive voice in academic writing. I generally like the use of active voice, as it is more concise and makes clear who did what. It assigns responsibility and agency.

Unfortunately some writers shy away from the use of personal pronouns in academic writing, which leads to my least favorite version: "This chapter investigates phenomenon xyz." The active voice, but the actor is the chapter or thesis itself.

No, the chapter does not investigate anything. It is a stack of paper, it can not conduct experiments. You, the author, did all the work. Give yourself some credit and take responsibility. What's your take? Do you prefer active or passive voice?

So much good news already this week and it is only Tuesday! Paper accepted, master's student did a great job at his thesis defense, another paper nearly accepted, interesting preliminary results from a student's latest experiment. Today being a research group leader is a lot of fun! 👩‍🔬 😊

I keep thanking the gardeners who had my allotment before me, for planting grape vines. The only thing that was happy during this extreme summer and they keep giving me a great harvest.

A very garden heavy dinner tonight. Courgette, beans, and purslane pesto all from my allotment. I am delighted that I have anything to harvest after a late start to the garden year and a record drought / heatwave.

Spent a couple of hours in the garden today pottering around, weeding, and even harvesting a bit. One of my most prolific weeds is common purslane, which is edible. So weeding and harvest are the same thing. Cleared half a bed to sow kale, got 1.5kg of purslane.

I do like to grow unusual varieties so that my garden veg does not look like it came from the supermarket. In this case the climbing French Bean "Blauhilde". This blue Hilda was the first of this year's varieties to be ready.

I took over an allotment in June. Turns out right before a historic drought and heatwaves, is a bad time to start a garden. The last 3 months have been absurd. Very grateful to the previous allotmenteers who planted grapes. Only plant that was remotely happy this summer! Picked 'a few' grapes today.

My kitchen scale could not cope with their weight so will have to weigh them in batches later. This is also not the first time I have harvested some. Already over 7kg this year. Plus today's at least 6++kg and there are more still on the vines.
