hi, i'm still looking for a job few things that have changed: - i am now around wrocław - im relaxing the "no mandatory use of LLM" constraint as long as I can use a model from a company outside of the US, such as deepseek or kimi i still value code quality and robustness more than anything

hi, just a reminder that I'm still looking for a job in the paris region or remote. i'm fluent in (typed) python and ocaml and adept of functional patterns (with a tint of pragmatism) and imperative shell, functional core in particular my skills shine in maintaining and cleaning up existing code

The Dutch reviews of Classical Chinese are in: “eww”. Harsh… (It stands for eigenschapwerkwoord, an awkward attempt to capture the non-Indo-European verb semantics. The registered trademark is apparently for “radical”…) #classicalchinese

A compiler is a pipeline of more and more restrictive languages and transformations that attempt to convert a program in one stage to the next one

Parsing consists in determining whether you can convert it such that it is a valid program in the AST language you have designed. You'd call it syntactically valid from the PoV of your PL. More generally, the validity of a program is actually relative to the language it is encoded in.

In fact, this is why it is possible to reuse components of a compiler for different programming languages! This is also why saying "I'm designing a programming language" hides so well the complexity of doing so. You actually have to design *a bunch* of languages in a huge trenchcoat!

The source code is written in the language of strings, that is extremely permissive. Tokenizing consists in determining whether you can convert it such that it is a valid program in the token-based language you have designed. You'd call it lexically valid from the PoV of your PL.

To me, this has always been a hint that maybe files are not the right abstraction after all

Retracting my statement about it feeling more central than associativity.

I don't really know much about complexity theory but it seems to have interesting implications

They should write a paper on how profile pictures massively influence my preemptive opinion of people (bad|good)

The job market is so shit, the people who are applying to the same jobs as me are on average vastly overqualified 😭

So: you need both commutativity and associativity to derive mediality. You can derive associativity from identity and mediality alone. A unital magma that's medial is a monoid. A commutative semigroup is medial. Fascinating.

genuinely insane how delicious this is

today's lunch :) recipe of my own, second time preparing it. ingredients include leek, lardons, crème fraîche, goat cheese and a bit of gray pepper. even tastier if you have some lime juice at hand (which I didn't this time) best eaten with sliced bread, as pictured

two downsides are that its pretty fat and definitely not vegan. but otherwise its cheap, easy and quick to make for something that is genuinely one of my favorite meals taste wise
