I agree with @zoesqwilliams.bsky.social on this. Virtually everyone I know seems to think sentences are getting shorter. The Government cannot possibly win this with more toughness on crime. And Burnham seems to have sacked Timpson who appeared to recognise this very clearly.

theguardian.comWhy are prisons overcrowded? Because no government will stand up to the tabloids | Zoe WilliamsWhatever happens to the early release scheme, Andy Burnham needs to consider the possibility that sentences are just too high, writes Zoe Williams

I'm very pleased to see this, though also ashamed that "aim to permit" (which tells local authorities to allow new being ships by default) was a Labour initiative in 2005. Championed at the time by Harriet Harman. Good work @dawnbutlerbrent.bsky.social - I hope you also voted against it in 2005.

Happy St George’s Day to everyone celebrating across London 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Today we’re reminded of England’s proud history and the values that continue to unite us.

I'm for socially progressive politics and European alignment, I've lost faith in Labour, and Labour is losing seats. It's not impossible to turn around. But we urgently need to bin Blue Labour, talk up progressive policies, build houses, and likely, change leader to someone the public likes.

Great work. Love the way that Trafalgar Square is used for these different celebrations of the many cultures that make up my brilliant city. More of this please.

Londoners: celebrate Sikh culture in the heart of the capital for Vaisakhi 2026. Join us in Trafalgar Square for a free day of music, performances, and community spirit for the whole family. When: Saturday 18 April Location: Trafalgar Square Time: 12pm–6pm www.london.gov.uk/events/vaisa...

I agree with @zoesqwilliams.bsky.social - nothing in the law requires exclusion. Whether you're the Women's Institute or the Girl Guides you have the option of just making your rules say you accept biological females and trans girls/women. This is an act of choice, not legal necessity.

theguardian.comGirlguiding didn’t have to do this to its trans members. There was another way | Zoe WilliamsGirlguiding’s response to last year’s supreme court ruling is not the humane option – and changes the organisation’s identity, says Guardian columnist Zoe Williams

I'm Labour, but have to say this cheers me. Reform took all of the conservative vote and about 1/6 of Labour's. Greens took nearly half of labour and all of the Lib Dem's vote. Labour must stop aping Reform and start engaging with the Greens agenda again. That is what we viewed for in 2024.

Obsession with race and performative cruelty revealed. And a weird focus on changing the use of churches - I'm an atheist but love to see the layers of faith in a church/synagogue/mosque. If you want to preserve churches, stop them becoming pubs and housing. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

Like a Labour council claiming Reform want to put flagpoles in every garden at a cost of £2,000 per residence and then saying they won't do it at a saving of £60 million. Nonsense. If the budget doesn't reduce as a result of the saving, it ain't a saving. www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

I should say, I don't feel superior or exceptional. Intrigued that so few words can tell you so much about a person. I'd absolutely love for the UK to try to regain EU membership, on any terms. Sadly, we're realistically miles away from that now. I will always think there's potential for a deal.

The sheer sense of superiority …

GQ is frequently full of it - wearing a band tee is only acceptable if you're in the band (I'd say questionable in that case), but outright cosplay in expensive repro of the band's clothing? Absolutely. Bring it on. I do like that Desire jacket mind you... www.gq-magazine.co.uk/music/articl...

Incredible photography taken within Kowloon's walked city - interspersed with AI images that are by turns kitsch, silly, and quite compelling. Although impressive, I think I'd prefer it if the AI images weren't there - I feel they somehow reduce the photographs. www.theguardian.com/artanddesign...
