I left a comfy UX/Eng job at Google to build Quiche Browser and an indie brand around my love for the Web, minimalism, and questionable naming. https://quiche.industries 📍🇫🇷🇪🇺🛫🗼🇯🇵

Quiche Browser for iPhone Duo: • More vertical reading space than Safari. • Pick and place every button in the vertical toolbar and the ... menu. • Optionally hide all toolbars on scroll. Compatibility update coming this weekend, new toolbar over the next few weeks, and more layout options later.

The initial idea for the new toolbar on iPad was letting users insert spaces between buttons, to separate them into Liquid Glass groups. Then I realized that would be unnecessarily tedious. So instead, buttons with related functions are automatically grouped when next to each other. Zero setup.

Big update to Quiche Browser for iPad today, notably: • A new toolbar more suitable for large screens, and working great at any size. • Related toolbar buttons visually grouped automatically for more clarity. • Self-resizing grids of tabs and favorites, to use screen space efficiently. #indiedev

1150+ members are now generously funding the development of Quiche Browser! After 3 years, Quiche ᴘʟᴜꜱ might prove that a web browser can be: • 100% user-funded • built one feature at a time, with intention, instead of piling them up incoherently • designed and coded by a human brain, not robots

Quiche ᴘʟᴜꜱ is what makes building Quiche Browser my full-time job, so please consider joining! You'll get all present and future perks, at the cheapest they'll ever be. I don't raise prices for existing members.

I think @kagi.com’s decision to stop developing Orion on Linux and Windows is the right one, but I’d go further and stop Orion development altogether and instead concentrate on being the best search and AI assistant, and fund the likes of @quiche.industries which has already made an amazing browser

It's mind-boggling how clunky almost all 3rd-party iOS browsers are. Here's my little Quiche Browser vs Brave, Edge, Firefox, and Vivaldi... Look at how the photo jumps abruptly as the toolbar collapses and expands, everywhere but in Quiche Browser.

And same issue in Arc Search, Opera, DuckDuckGo, Ecosia, and Aloha! Almost got motion sickness recording this video, but always happy and proud to spend an unhealthy amount of time building a smoother reading experience than anywhere else.

More experiments on iPhone Duo's outer display: A&B: Vertical toolbar + bottom or top primary toolbar. C&D: Time moved to the top, minimal toolbar (shows menu on tap), and full-width web page. D goes further by completely hiding the front camera. Apple designers might hate these. Ship or skip?

• Should the 2-row toolbar stay as an option on the outer display? • In landscape, should the inner display show buttons at the top (like Safari) or on the side (like all other apps)? • Will buttons next to a web page be too distracting while reading? • Waste of time porting the Classic theme?

Split-screen browsing on Quiche Browser beta for iPad just got A LOT more comfortable, thanks to the new adaptive toolbar rearranging buttons to fit neatly inside narrow windows. (DM me for invites!)

Just submitted the next Quiche Browser update to Apple. Will hopefully be approved before iOS 27 ships on Monday, and then on to building a new customizable vertical toolbar for the iPhone Duo 📱📖

BitCam 2.1 is out! This is a fun one: you can now install a macOS system extension to use BitCam as a camera in Zoom, PhotoBooth, Google Meet, WebEx... any app that lets you pick a camera.

Another nice little byproduct of making Quiche Browser fully resizable on iOS 27: reading in landscape mode will finally become bearable! • The toolbar moves to the top. • Buttons rearrange themselves into one row. • Wide websites fully expand horizontally, without breaking their layout.

Coming later this year to Quiche Browser: • Moving the toolbar out of the way, to the top of the screen. • Top+bottom toolbar layouts, like OG Safari. Maybe like me back then, you thought everyone prefers the toolbar at the bottom nowadays? Well, not according to these angry App Store reviews!

It sounded like a gimmick to me at first, but using iPhone apps in wide size might be my favorite feature of macOS 27 Golden Gate. And with the upcoming adaptive toolbar in Quiche Browser on iOS 27, it feels an inch closer to an actual Mac version. Even iPad keyboard shortcuts are working!

The original Macintosh had a 1-bit black or white screen - but it did not have a "dark mode" Working on BitCam was a fun opportunity to imagine what that could look like!

Coming soon to Quiche Browser: adaptive toolbars! Shrink the app, and it will rearrange your large toolbar into two small ones, so that all your buttons fit on screen.

(This feature may or may not be related to some upcoming foldable iPhone, so please everyone, be angels and sell a couple of your organs to buy one, so that my summer work won't have been in vain.)

I wanted BitCam's editor to be a pixel perfect hommage to Macintosh System 1.0 - but what do you do for the Apple logo? It's going to be an instant App Store rejection. The trick? The app ships with a fruit logo, and users who wish to do so can remove a few pixels to make it what it should be.

BitCam 2 is live! A complete rewrite and upgrade of this classic 10 year old iPhone 1-bit camera app: Greatly expanding the Camera mode, adding a brand new Editor mode full of pixel-perfect surprises, and full native support for iPad/macOS Free download! bitcam.app

Firefox, in another one of their user-hostile moves: • Disables their ad blocker on iOS by default. • While their AI features must be opted out of manually. Quiche Browser has no AI features, and blocks Google AI overviews and ads out of the box. Most people don't want any of that nonsense.

It's my favorite time of the year: dropping everything to prepare new features for the next iOS version, which also means redesigning parts of Quiche Browser settings. I've been doing that for a while now and I love the process, but the dread of adding unnecessary complexity is always there. #iOS27

By popular demand, plenty of new actions are now available when long-pressing the address bar in Quiche Browser. Also, the nightmare is finally over: the app no longer opens the Google app when returning to a tab with search results 🎊

Many thanks for all the lovely App Store reviews lately! Reading them was such a great morale boost while I was struggling to get these tab gestures right 🫶🙏🙇‍♂️

Starting today, Quiche Browser disables AI overviews in search results by default, out of the box. Compare how much space and time they waste. I love the web too much to let that nonsense bury links to real websites made by humans. Why no other browser does that is beyond me.

New feature coming to Quiche Browser tomorrow. It is: • Search related • Ultra simple • Radical • A shame no other browser offers it. Free Quiche ᴘʟᴜꜱ code to whoever guesses it first!

My little indie web browser is turning 3 today! 100,000+ downloads and 990 Quiche ᴘʟᴜꜱ members later, it might be on track to become a viable solo business. The only way to express my gratitude is to keep pushing to make this app much better 🫶

It's also proof that doing one or two things well beats being average everywhere, and that quality-of-life features outlast chasing AI fads. If this also resonates with you, please join and make Quiche ᴘʟᴜꜱ a 1,000+ party!
