It’s been 72 hrs since the fire department got the fire mostly out and there’s still a slow and steady trickle of water coming out of the building. Fires are so fucking scary.

(Mostly out in that around 11pm is when the roof started collapsing in enough for them to douse from the top, not… that the fire is still burning…)

Lmfao if I wasn't, you know, suspended on Etsy and also opposed to the entirety of their business model and practice as a company, I would consider selling on Etsy again just for having the balls to tell sellers that their digital files MUST have a photo of the resulting product.

"It would cost money and time to test print/sew all of this" Uhhhh you are asking for people to spend money on your work. You can ask them to be forgiving of a human error or two, but how could you ask them to take a gamble on something you yourself have no idea about.

Does it suck for sellers to have to go back through listings to add images, sure, but you'd think it would increase sales to prove it's a functioning file!

God knows some of these people will sew their sample sizes and still get away with Clo "auto grading" with fucked up armscyes and waistbands with other sizes but hey. It's a start!!

Typically we don't put images of our kits on our file listings and vice versa to not be confusing –– they come up together in search anyway –– but it's honestly a great policy to knock out unprintable STLs, unsewable digitally generated sewing patterns, and incomprehensible crochet. I'd do it.

Sorry not sorry random rant but sometimes when people are like “cosplay is just toxic drama and popularity contests” I’m like… if you sincerely want to love cosplay again, you need to unchain yourself from that mentality to preserve this thing you love.

Community means community effort!! Giving into cynicism and deciding it’s all fucked and unfixable and toxic is just speeding up the process of losing community.

There’s obvs some economic shit going on with affordability, esp with cons, but like… if you find yourself thinking “everything here sucks”… please… join a few discords where conversation happens. Invite a friend over to craft. Take a class. Go to a meet-up. Look another cosplayer in the eye.

And the con situation ain’t hot rn, but cons don’t have to be a coral reef or a hole-in-the-ozone-layer situation where people throw their hands up and say “it’s so sad that there’s no fixing this” when it’s actually very fixable. We should not give up on the biggest social gatherings we have.

Generally speaking if you experience the cosplay community mostly through algorithmic social media or experience conventions as some sort of social outing to make content, yeah, you are going to see the “toxicity” more because you are seeing the most capitalistic form of it.

That is the joy killer. Cosplay not as a hobby or creative exercise or social experience but as a thing that demands to be justified thru the acquisition of money, social capital or approval wrt beauty standards or fame.

The majority of people are super positive about meeting people cosplaying the same characters as them. Lots of cosplay groups form with or without doubles with no fanfare. Very few people care if groups have obvious skill differences.

Tons of people compete in contests and have fun and have perfectly reasonable “aww shucks better luck next time” reactions to not getting prizes, and have fun with the experience anyway.

We have an incredible range of body diversity, racial diversity, gender expression, skill, talent and niche interests. There’s a solid spread of series represented in cosplay. It’s fun to meet strangers at cons dressed from the same series, and it happens all the time.

Tons of people make costumes; not more than buying, but definitely a lot. It’s far more common to see people vagueposting about drama than the actual drama. Hot takes are rare. Egirl hotties with onlyfans are just a handful of people in a huge crowd.

Tons of “big names” in cosplay are total nobodies to the average cosplayer because their audience is people who like to look at cosplayers, not cosplayers themselves. And that’s fine. The big names are fine. Nobody’s pretending, they’re just a different flavour.

I was supposed to see a movie last night but instead I was removing costumes and equipment from the building as firefighters doused it, and it just felt like adding insult to injury for Cineplex to be like "no refunds :)" on their app but I called today and they made an exception. Wow... humanity...

Entire team is in a state of "what the fuck" as we wrangle the fucking fire stuff and everything is a nightmare and we're commiserating and then Jules hits us with "I brought lunch conceptually... it's just rice and cut up parsnips. Unseasoned."

Our neighbour’s antique shop went up in flames tonight. It took 30 fire response vehicles four hours to bat the fire down. We were evacuated, as our buildings are connected. No fatalities thank god but very very stressful evening.

And a huge thanks to the firefighters who obviously risked their lives battling the fire… that was terrifying. I’m going to be hearing their life support alarms going off in my dreams.

Devastated for the antique shop owner, too. He escaped with his life, but lost everything else. His home, his livelihood, his pet. Just awful.

Shout out to my team and friends with cars who came to load up machinery and computers and bins of commissions… it was incredibly fucking dicey for a bit there and we got extremely, extremely lucky.

Making a 7 of 9 cosplay for a client and laughing because I can't see the side of her face with the little star shaped prosthetic because she's always serving cut looking slightly to the right. LET ME SEE THE RIGHT SIDE OF YOUR FACE!!!!

There isn't a commissioner on the planet who doesn't sit up straighter whenever they see a familiar name come in. I've never met most of them, and yet I love them.

Jules and I both often end up in conversations with people who have no idea why we wouldn't want to use AI in business, and we actively get services we use to disable AI on our accounts where possible.

And businesses are learning that as they lose customers by forcing them to interact with AI chatbots, or AI screws over their website's back end, or AI cheapens their products.

I will die on this hill every week until this shit is gone, and mark my words, it will go. Nobody wants to pay what AI cost to run, and I will be overjoyed when they go the way of SmarterChild and ELIZA.

They are also inquisitive and new buyers sometimes ASK and it means something to me to be able to say NO, we do not use AI, and that's how it will always be.

But it is telling to me that the most success we've had in getting the services we use to back the fuck off AI is telling them it impacts the bottom line. More AI = less sales. People don't want it. They associate it with scams, misrepresentation, job loss and environmental collapse.

Sometimes they do not take us seriously UNTIL we specify that we would lose business if we used AI. Our clients are based and care about real, living, breathing human artists. (And some deceased ones too, surely, but definitely humans.) We value integrity + clients who share in that.

The other week someone was like how would your clients know? Why would they care about this? Well, because our clients aren't fucking stupid. They know when something is phoned in, crap, broken, nonfunctional, useless or otherwise unpleasant to use.

I was trying to find one of my old blog posts today and Google's dipshit AI summary said my best friend owns my business and that I am apparently designing a masterclass in a colourblocking. That people trust this shit with their business or medical stuff is bonkers.

Employers worldwide are pulling back on AI as they navigate a flood of errors and low-quality work that sap employee time, raise privacy and security risks, and drive up costs
