2026-09-15: Due to torrential rains and broken gutters, the threshold of the basement door has started to rot out. I tried covering it until I could fix the gutter, but inadvertently create a mini greenhouse for this little guy (about an inch in diameter). #FungiFriends

Actually posted 2026-07-03. Why does Bluesky not give the option to date posts? "Dear diary, I'm not going to date these entries...you'll just have to figure it out from vague clues and context. I don't like being pinned down. Ta!"

A mass of mushrooms popped up in a neighbour's yard this week. Some variety of Amanita, I'd guess, with the largest ones being about six inches across. My phone camera wasn't cooperating that day so they appear washed out; they were a soft orangey yellow colour. #FungiFriday #FungiFriends

Had a good long walk yesterday, saw Lady Slippers, a chipmunk (usually only see squirrels), irises, forest floor carpeted in seed fluff, and the largest tadpoles we've ever seen (about six inches long). #NatureWalk #NaturePhotography

This batch of tiny labels came with a set of plastic cases (shown in background) but I'll never use them for that so I decided to decorate them for use with my junk journals. Coloured with oxide ink and then stamped. #junkjournalling #junkjournaling #journalephemera #papercrafts

Spent the last week or so making pressed flower ephemera for junk journals, to try and use up some of the dried flowers I've collected. Haven't even made a dent. ๐Ÿ˜† These aren't complete, there will be stamping and more decorating. #junkjournalling #junkjournaling #journalephemera #papercrafts

First test stamp of some tall, narrow numbers I carved from one of those pink Speedball lino blocks. I sized the numbers to fill as much of the line block as possible so they are about 3" tall (7.5cm). Very happy with the results so far. #junkjournal #junkjournalling #linocut #stampcarving

Christmas ornaments I made last year, also upcycled from toilet paper rolls. #PaperCrafts #ChristmasCrafts

Long detailed thread of instructions for making this tree ornament from toilet paper rolls failed to upload so here is the abbreviated version. Self-explanatory really but feel free to ask if you have questions if you have them. Also check out the ALT text. #papercraft #xmasornament

A snapshot of one shelf in my den of curiosities, featuring a collection of amber glassware, clear glassware, a set of shark jaws, a leather-covered bottle, a lamp made of a white crystal, a candle holder, and a set of clam shells. #WunderkammerWednesday #CabinetOfCuriosities

Deep beneath your feet, two enormous blobs (technically known as BLOBs) sit at the top of Earth's core. They may be remnants of a protoplanet that collided with ours 4.5 billion years ago. New evidence suggests they're still linked to volcanic eruptions today. ๐Ÿงช๐Ÿ”ญ eos.org/articles/bla...

#WunderkammerWednesday A #CabinetOfCuriosities doesn't need to fill a room to be interesting. Seen here is a cloche filled with marine items - lobster claw, various shells and seaweeds, a sand dollar, a sea urchin shell, a stone with barnacles, and a mermaid's purse.

Today's #WunderkammerWednesday delves into the macabre practice of animal taxidermy, with this mounted specimen of the Goliath birdeater tarantula, late of the Dominican Republic. This is a smaller specimen with the body at 6cm long, and legs diagonally 15cm tip to tip. #CabinetofCuriosities

A bit of whimsy from the old #CabinetofCuriosities for this week's #WunderkammerWednesday -- look away those of you with delicate constitutions! Here is presented a vial reportedly containing dried merman sperm, method of collection unknown but no doubt a mind-boggling feat.

Not a fungus this time but fungi-adjacent. Ghost Pipe is a parasitic plant that survives by sapping nutrition through the fungal web of mycorrhizae around tree roots. So... #FungiEnemies? Ghost Pipe is white because it doesn't use photosynthesis to grow. #FungiFriends #FungiFriday

From my #CabinetofCuriosities for this week's #WunderkammerWednesday is this antique pocket microscope, also known as a field microscope as they were intended to be used in actual fields. Purchased from a local woman who found it in their attic. Likely dates from the 1850s.

Speaking of wire, here are a few pieces of wire #bobbinlace that I made years ago when it was all the rage (in bobbin lace circles). The oval piece is actually two parts and was intended as part of a larger doily. I never made any of the other rounds. #wireart

A double entry for this week's #WunderkammerWednesday include two preserved specimens of extraordinary blooms discovered by Lord D_ at opposite ends of the world. First a species of wood-like rose, found thriving on a peak in the Andes. Alas, attempts to cultivate it failed. ๐Ÿงต

The second entry is a variety of metallic rose, discovered in a Himalayan meadow. The petals could be shaped and cut just like metal foil. No cause for the mutation was ever discovered; it was speculated the plant drew up metals from washout of near-by deposit. #CabinetofCuriosities
