I want all these rights safeguarded. Tories and Reform want us all to be economic units with no rights at all.

Sarah Murphy@13sarahmurphy.bsky.social

The ECHR is not a "left-wing project" but a "safeguard against arbitrary government" He describes the Tory party now as “a political party that cannot tolerate support for fundamental human rights.” What a disgrace. How are they different from Reform exactly? www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Amazingly, Reform controlled Wakefield council has just voted to end 2 hours free parking in their centre on the grounds that it hasn’t attracted any more shopping activity. They say people won’t come because of free parking but want a better quality town centre offer. Quite right.

More good data on the longer term impact of LTNs

Oxford Clarion@oxfordclarion.bsky.social

A report on 5 years of Low Traffic Neighbourhoods in East Oxford shows that they have reduced road casualties by over 100. The report by the Coalition for Healthy Streets and Active Travel (CoHSAT) also points to the health benefits of reduced air pollution and performance of Cowley Road shops.

My very unscientific surveys suggest a big increase in EV usage (as opposed to sales) this summer. On my 40 mile round trip to Leeds each Saturday (same route and time) I count EVs. Around Easter I would count 30-40, now it's never below 100 and last weekend was 150.

My other count is my morning dog-walk which includes about 100m along a busy main road. At Eastertime seeing one EV was an event, now it's never less than 2, even on Sundays when traffic is light.

So the LibDems are talking about a big cut in fuel duty. This would mark a big growth in subsidies to motorists which would benefit the wealthy the most. They drive the most and drive the least fuel efficient cars.

Of the 29 pedestrians killed on the pavement, 28 were hit by cars and one by a mobility scooter. None were hit by bicycles or e-bikes.

So much for ‘optimism bias’ in forecasts for new public transport schemes.

How do blind and partially sighted people get to a bus stop on the other side of the road? The number of blind people killed by a cyclist is close to, if not actually, zero, but the number killed by cars is significant. But you wouldn't believe it from this story. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

bbc.co.ukFloating bus stops will cause accidents, say campaignersSight loss groups are concerned about new-style bus stops in places including Leeds and Cleckheaton.

This is hardly unique. Our village of Kinlochard in the Trossachs regularly suffers from this sort of behaviour, with similar consequences on any warm and sunny weekend.

Yet more selfish drivers parking where they like and not considering locals or blue light and bus services. www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Motornormativity in action @tesco in Sowerby Bridge. On the high street but the only entrance is at the back in the car park. Pedestrians must climb a hill while walking round 3 sides of the store. No bike parking

Moving home and amazing difference between private and public sector. Spent 2 hours on the phone to BT only to be told they couldn’t do anything until we move and then we would have to wait 2-3 weeks for service. Council tax was all dealt with in 3 minutes

A sensible manifesto for main roads in cities

Low Traffic Hackney@lowtraffichackney.bsky.social

We don’t just want more and better LTNs, we want Hackney main roads to change. 10% of Hackney residents live on main roads, and we want those people to feel the benefit too. Here’s how main roads should be changed in Hackney: www.lowtraffichackney.org/hackneys-mai... #hackney #LTN #traffic

I see that Kemi Badenoch would scrap the 2030 ban on the sale of new fossil fuelled cars - demonstrating, once again, the Tories’ mistaken belief that there are millions of car brained voters who will allow freedom to drive as you like to determine their votes.

This is fascinating and I look forward to seeing what happens

Søren Have@sorenhave.dk

Exciting road pricing news out of Denmark! Today a new expert group for designing the future car taxation was announced, with a focus on the externalities from cars. See the terms of reference below. I will soon follow up with a piece on why I think it actually can lead to GPS-based road pricing.

Yet another evidence review argues very strongly that simply providing alternatives to driving doesn't reduce driving This isn't surprising, if only thanks to habit. If I unthinkingly jump in my car for every trip (as many do), new buses won't change that www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
