Happy Monday! 🍂🍁 Fall is definitely here in Durham! Feeling grateful for another day, and the opportunity to make a difference. Wishing everyone a week filled with gratitude, joy, and peace. ❤️

I’ve been working out lifting weights since I was a teenager. I just saw a guy spray water on himself and then make a video. I think to show that he was “sweating” and “working hard.” Probably the strangest thing I’ve seen.

Working out and finding inspiration from an old The Go-Go’s song Capture the Light: “Grab on to the light And hold it in your heart Used to hunt for darkness And it would follow me Wherever I go Now I'm looking up again I got no more time For feeling low”

Here’s another verse “Light and luck and love Everybody wants To touch the stars Take a piece of happiness Hold on tight Keep trying hard”

In other news, our Secretary of Defense/Secretary of War appears determined to create an army of extreme Christian soldiers. He used the language of Christian spiritual warfare while speaking directly to the people who lead our service members.

I served in the United States Army. Religious freedom for service members matters. But the United States military is not a Christian military. And it should never become one.

We need more women in leadership and more women in positions of power. But we also need women in those positions who understand how deeply patriarchy shapes our society. Because women can blame women too.

A man can get probation. A woman can live with the trauma for the rest of her life. Is it because we don’t understand how traumatizing rape is? Is it because our society has spent generations teaching men that women’s bodies are theirs to take?

I don’t know. But I do know I’m tired of living in a society that worries about ruining a man’s life while minimizing the life he has already traumatized.

We need more women in leadership and more women in positions of power. But we also need women in those positions who understand how deeply patriarchy shapes our society. Because women can blame women too.

When judges, prosecutors, and other people in positions of authority give men a slap on the wrist for sexual violence, who are they identifying with? Why does our system seem to have more sympathy for the man who committed the violence than for the woman who has to live with what he did?

I went to college in the late ’80s and early ’90s. With everything we supposedly know about consent, drugs, alcohol, power, and sexual violence, how is this still happening? We’ve spent decades educating people about sexual violence. At this point, I don’t think education is enough.

Men need to understand that you do not take advantage of someone incapacitated by alcohol or drugs, and you certainly don’t incapacitate someone in order to get what you call “consent.” And we need to stop blaming women for what men choose to do to them.

We need laws with real consequences, and we need institutions willing to enforce them. Because if the consequences for sexual violence amount to a slap on the wrist, why would anything change?

For those who don't speak military: Pete Hegseth's highest rank was major. In civilian terms, that's basically middle management. That's not an insult to majors. It's perspective. He talks like he spent his military career in the C-suite. He didn't.

Tomorrow I'm teaching Torah study, which means today I'm doing one of my favorite rabbi activities: figuring out how to turn the 47 things I want to teach into the 4 things we actually have time for. 😂

Bridget 🐕got me up at 4:30 this morning because she was sick, so I took her outside and went back to bed. Then at 5:30 🐕 Simon started crying because he needed to go out. And somehow, after all that, I am now up an hour and a half later than I should be. 😂 Good morning, everybody.

Sukkot asks us to spend time in something fragile and temporary—and still call it sacred. Maybe the lesson isn’t that we can make life secure. Maybe it’s that we can still build, gather, and find joy even when it isn’t. 🌿 What is Sukkot asking you to notice this year?

Had a wonderful meeting today with Rev. Lisa B. Garcia-Sampson. So grateful for her friendship and for the partnership between UU Justice NC and Carolina Jews for Justice. This work is better when we do it together. 💜

I love Libra season because my birthday is coming. But I sit in meetings with mostly white people, and they talk about how happy they are that it’s fall. I don’t like fall because winter is coming. So somebody explain this to me: why do white people like fall so much?

The Kennedy Center board says they’ll go broke unless Trump’s name goes back on the building. Which is wild, considering they started going broke after they put his name on it. He set the kitchen on fire, and now they’re saying the only way to save the house is to give him back the matches.

As the second day of Rosh Hashanah comes to a close and we move deeper into the Days of Awe, ask yourself: What am I carrying from the past year that I do not want to carry into the new one?

Phang: I’m here in Dallas, Texas, at the Republican National Convention’s midterm convention. I can tell you it’s an incredibly underwhelming energy here. Many of you may have been to conventions in other cities. There is a dynamic, almost frenetic energy surrounding a convention. Here? Womp womp

Is there some awkward meaning behind this comment or are you just trying to spread joy. If the latter go forth and spread joy.
