Back from a trip to the wild north. Before the storm kicked in, we went for a very wet walk and enjoyed some autumnal colours. We also managed to squeeze in a daytime and an overnight recording of tall trees in the wind. Fingers crossed they have come out ok. It was really very windy. 🍃

After we left the museum on Saturday we pretty much had the trees to ourselves. Just the distant sound of the M25 to remind us where we were. A few squirrels and birds around.

A bomb shelter with a blast door, store room, offices and listening stations showing the equipment. The Listeners tuned in and identified important conversations. They recorded them on a record (with a 7 min capacity) which were then transcribed. Secrets were heard and helped to save lives.

But the reason it is a museum is because of how it was used during WWII. German POW who were officers were kept here. The house had been fitted out with the latest technology so teams of Secret Listeners could tune in to their conversations and share intelligence.

There is still a lot of building work going on around the site. The house and land has gone through many hands over the years. Current owners are Berkeley Homes. After many years of campaigning, the museum's future was secured.

A warm welcome from the desk staff and volunteers and we are in. The ground floor of the museum shows the house in its 1920/30s heyday when it was used for "entertaining the most prominent figures of the day".
