Shared before, but, since they're #1 this week in Oct. '73: I wouldn't posit that this is the best Rolling Stones album, but it IS my favorite. Probably has to do with the fact that I was 16 and this was MY Rolling Stones album. Plus, "Angie" aside, great rockers! Fitting end to a GREAT #AT40!

Just a couple weeks before this Oct. '73 #AT40, I'd see Elton John (and his great band!) at Pittsburgh's Civic Arena premiering new songs from the just-released "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album. Remembering hearing "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" for the 1st time still gives me chills!

I was a white kid in a Pittsburgh suburb who had minimal exposure (and, frankly, interest) in soul / R&B. BUT, I remember hearing Eddie Kendricks' "Keep On Truckin'" and thought it was truly cool. Didn't know the Temps connection, it was just a new song. Fall '73 was just AWESOME for music! #AT40

Osmond Inc. completely understood the retail marketing concept of increasing "shelf space." One item may cannibalize another, but, ultimately, it, cumulatively, meant more $ for the parent company. Marie's "Paper Roses" Oct. '73 on #AT40

THEY JUST KEPT COMING THAT FALL OF 1973!! In ADDITION to the below greats, here's Grand Funk still riding high with their summer '73 "We're An American Band." So, so lucky to have been a rock & roll teenager then 😁 #AT40

Correction! We had Joe Walsh, The Doobie Brothers and EDGAR WINTER GROUP rattling the windows that October of 1973! (See why I was so happy?) Here's "Free Ride" at #17 on #AT40

Years before George Harrison almost single-handedly saved the film careers of Monty Python, here's comedy super fan Harrison joining Cheech & Chong at the height of their fame with the glorious "Basketball Jones" Oct. '73. #AT40

Fall 1973 we had Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" AND The Doobs' "China Grove" screaming out of our radios. The rockers were breaking through!! ("China" #18 this week in '73 on #AT40)

Oh, HELL yes! Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" rockin' the bejeezus out of our radios that Oct. '73! (But why, oh why, did Casey play this painfully truncated edit?? BAD CASEY! BAD!) #AT40

Bonus Who's At The Bottom Of The Billboard Hot 100 this week in Oct. '73: A new band out of Boston would enter the chart at #88 with "Dream On." It'd only climb to #59 that fall... but would be re-released in 1976 to much greater success 😉. #AT40 (original pressing below w. smaller band pic)

The glorious results when George Harrison worked with Ringo Starr hit their zenith with "Photograph" that fall of 1973. It's one of those songs that makes me beam a big smile... and kind of want to cry a little 😉. #AT40

For the rockers out there: this week's Who's At The Bottom Of The Billboard Hot 100 finds Uriah Heep at #94 with "Stealin'." It wouldn't get out of the 90's on the chart. Heep sold millions, but couldn't get arrested on #AT40.

I feel so lucky... that I've never heard this Osmonds song until today. Hoping another 53 years pass before I hear it again! "Let Me In" Oct. '73 on #AT40

We all benefitted so much that ABBA's Bjorn and, especially, Benny, were thoroughly trained composers. Utilizing "Take a chance, take a chance, take a chukka-chance-chance" turns that backing vocal into a percussive element. Sure, done before, but this is the stuff that elevated their songs. #AT40

Desolation BOULEVARD album. (Typing too fast!) #AT40

Sweet come back AGAIN in 1978. Popped up on our radios in '73 with "Little Willie," went quiet until '75's "Desolation Album" brought us "Ballroom Blitz" and "Fox On The Run," followed that with "Action," then another quiet 2 years and BAM! "Love Is Like Oxygen" May '78 on #AT40

If the Summer of 1971 was The Summer of Carole (King,) was the Summer of 1978 The Summer of Gerry Rafferty? Maybe! ("Baker Street" climbing the chart May '78 on #AT40)

I'm sure we're not alone, but my incredibly tight college gang took Meat Loaf's "Bat Out Of Hell" album straight into our hearts. The entire album just... really meant something to us. Still does to this day. ("Two Out Of Three Ain't Bad" May '78 on #AT40)

On tonight's Who's At The Bottom of the Billboard Hot 100, a couple of new previews for the summer of '78: a studious contemplation of the treasures of Egyptian King Tutankhamun (#89,) and a British quintet back after a 2-year absence with a song from their album about some girls (#76.) #AT40

I've come to learn I'm not the only one in AWE of maybe the best line ever to appear in a song: "I saw a werewolf drinking a Pina Colada at Trader Vic's. And his hair was perfect." Warren Zevon's "Werewolves of London" May '78 on #AT40

Yes, we know Bruce wrote this, but the fact that Patti Smith had an #AT40 hit was definitely proof that something was happening in music that year of 1978!

I just never paid attention to Linda Ronstadt. Actually, I take that back: my super-cool girlfriend bought me a poster of Linda in short-shorts, and it was up on my off-campus apartment wall for my senior year. (I'm sure I still have it rolled up somewhere.) "Tumbling Dice" May '78 on #AT40

Jim? Dash? I'm so sorry, but... we've moved on. Thanks for trying with "You're The Love," but there's a boatload of new rock coming down the pike and... it's just not your scene. Thanks & buh-bye. May '78 on #AT40

OK. Memorial Day 1978. The beginning of the summer of the Rock Renaissance of the 70's. Let's see how reflective of reality this #AT40 chart is! 🤞

I mean... ! For the billionth time (deep breath): if JOE BIDEN did this, it'd be the lead story across all mainstream media. Instead, it's just funny old Trump. "Yeah, he's nuts, but nothing new here." DO YOUR F*CKING JOB, MEDIA. Report honestly on our clearly addled president. #TrumpDementia

Are hallucinations a stage of dementia? Asking for an enemy...

NC-7th Rep. David Rouzer's latest vomit of lies includes taking credit for Biden-era infrastructure investment, while STILL blaming "Biden" for inflation, rather than TRUMP'S CRIPPLING TARIFFS & ILLEGAL WAR IN IRAN. Had enough? Vote for Democrat KIMBERLY HARDY! @kimberlyhardync.bsky.social

It’s not just Donald Trump. It’s the Republican Party. Tired of this shit? Show them this November. youtu.be/iqFjrxJvUEA

Remember: ALL REPUBLICANS ARE TRUMP. Every Republican in congress turns a blind eye or actively encourages traitorous Donald Trump as he does Russia's bidding to line their pockets, damage Ukraine & screw the American people. Had enough? #VoteBlueToSaveAmerica @lincolnproject.us

No Kings means you, too, Mark Zuckerberg. But, you knew that. So you "accidentally" (oops!) silenced the No Kings account for a good chunk of today. #VoteBlueToSaveAmerica - and vote early! (So that, among other things, we can look into anti-trust enforcements. Sleep tight, Zuck.)

Steve Lawrence with bombshell revelation: "That Donny Osmond version of "Go Away, Little Girl?" Yeah... that was me. They auto-pitched my voice way up & gave me a check to shut up about it. But, what the hell -let 'em sue me!" #AT40

Though 1971 featured The Summer of Carole (King,) it was also the summer of Paul's "Ram." I played the HELL out of this album all that summer. And, since #AT40 is perpetually on a "delay" from actual real-time music, here's "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" still high in the chart Oct. '71.

Grateful to Casey & co. giving us a break from the omnipresent "Maggie May" that fall '71 and actually playing one of the other GREAT songs from "Every Picture Tells A Story." ("Maggie" is a great song. Just... mix it up, people!) And, yes, I know what's coming on this Oct. '71 #AT40 chart... 😉

Season 2 of "The Partridge Family" had just started a few weeks earlier that fall of '71. The hit TV show continued being a hit single machine, with "I Woke Up In Love This Morning." The show was barely a year old, yet the Partridges already had their 3rd album out (I maintain their best!) #AT40

I suspect people who rolled their eyes at a title like "Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep" happily danced to "Boogie Oogie Oogie." (I'm 👎 on both songs!) Oct. '71 on #AT40

On this week's Who's At The Bottom Of The Billboard Hot 100, Raiders' singer Mark Lindsay hedging his bets with a solo career. Trying to regain his '70 success (Arizona, Silver Bird,) "Are You Old Enough" enters at #88. Written by Alan O'Day ("Undercover Angel,") it wouldn't get much higher. #AT40
