No matter how many awards you win as a reporter, the majority of your work — and likely some of your absolute best pieces — will receive nothing. In this reward structure, a journalist might reasonably conclude that they aren’t any good, because they didn’t win any awards.

Without a strong culture of service inside their newsroom, they might find themself chasing those awards, thinking that awards are the same as impact. We made RANGE a worker-owned cooperative to short-circuit these issues by building a community-centered, nurturing incentive structure.

US Rep. Michael Baumgartner has been endorsed by Trump as "a tremendous guy" and “a “pivotal vote” for tax cuts. There are a few moments where he has objected to parts of the Trump agenda, like when he pushed back against the DOGE closure of the Spokane NIOSH lab.

In the texts, which were added to court records as part of discovery in the Musselman family’s wrongful death lawsuit against the Spokane Police Department, the officers were trying to figure out how they would justify their presence at the scene.

rangemedia.coAfter RANGE revealed callous cop texts, sheriff reopens shooting investigationTwo months after he announced four Spokane police officers were justified in the 2024 killing of Joshua Musselman, the Spokane County Prosecutor asked investigators to take another look.

It highlights how Feucht — a litigious personality who has sued the City of Spokane for millions of dollars over a dispute about another of his concerts — uses local organizing hubs to advance his agenda. And it shows how the Spokane area is a wellspring for Christian nationalist organizing efforts.

ProPublica has been reporting for months on the Trump administration’s regulations on mail-in voting, gather state voter data and investigate voter eligibility ahead of the elections. They spoke with experts to answer questions about voting by mail. Read their story at RANGE.

rangemedia.coWhat to know about mail-in voting for the 2026 midtermsThe Supreme Court blocked the Trump administration from imposing new rules on mail-in voting before the November midterm elections. That means nothing has changed for voters — and mail-in voting can proceed as planned.

Before the primaries, we asked candidates running for local office a series of questions and some of them even answered. We cleaned up the clutter and pared down our questionnaires to just the candidates who survived in the primaries. See them all here:

Employees formed the WAISN Workers Collective in early September, prompted in part by what it described as WAISN’s financial crisis, an earlier round of layoffs, reduced hours and a perceived lack of transparency.

By the end of the month, WAISN laid off 14 people, including most of the workers in the union effort, leaving the entire organization at a lower capacity amid a surge in immigration enforcement.

This week in CIVICS: Spokane County is realizing that a good data center zoning policy is going to take more than four months to develop and will consider extending it until June 2027. Read about that and everything else going on at public meetings this week here:

But Friday evening, the department released a statement describing the message as “disturbing” and saying the department has added them to evidence in an internal affairs investigation into the officers’ conduct. Read the update and the full statement in our updated story here.

Staffers questioned his financial oversight of Comma, which hired his own son at a salary topping most reporters and recruited out-of-town executives to serve as top editors before Comma had met its fundraising goal.

Current and former Spokesman-Review employees also described workplace complaints involving Curley and one of those editors, including allegations of inappropriate lewd and sexual comments around employees, including teenage interns.

More than a dozen current and former employees, along with records reviewed by IW and RANGE, reveal how the newsroom had raised concerns about Curley’s management for years, culminating in his suspension from the paper on Aug. 7 and a vote of no confidence from the union.

Employees said stories that may have angered powerful community figures or potential donors were killed or curtailed, and that they felt he retaliated against workers he viewed as disloyal.

The messages in which officers Daniel Valencia and Matthew Stewart strategized their reports were part of a longer string of texts that started one hour and 14 minutes after they’d killed Joshua Musselman from more than 100 feet away as he was fleeing into his apartment.

It’s a warning to every journalist willing to accept an email answer from a politician — it used to be that reporters didn’t know if it was a candidate responding in writing or a PR flack. Now, we don’t know if the response is even human.
