Friends, federal funding for international education has once again been rescinded. It hasn't gotten much attention in the media, but last Friday, the White House announced a pocket rescission of $810 million in funding that Congress had already approved and signed into law.

In an era of increasing global challenges and conflicts, we need to develop the pipeline of international expertise in the US. Title VI programs are a crucial way to do this, and I hope a future administration will rebuild them.

International education programs are an investment in international expertise. Since the Eisenhower administration created them in the late 1950s, international programs have helped Americans develop crucial cultural, language, and regional knowledge.

Our students are the future leaders who will navigate global markets, participate in international partnerships and business, and deal with complicated geopolitics.

Friends, federal funding for international education has once again been rescinded. It hasn't gotten much attention in the media, but last Friday, the White House announced a pocket rescission of $810 million in funding that Congress had already approved and signed into law.

Among the cuts was $70 million in Department of Education international education funding, which was for the Centers Aligned with Areas of National Need (CAANN) program. This program was the successor to the Title VI international education programs that have supported area studies for decades.

Faculty and staff of the #CUBoulder Center for Asian Studies spent much of the summer developing our CAANN proposal, “Global Asias: Building National Capacity for Engagement with Asia and Its Global Impact.” We were expecting to learn the outcome in late September.
