i really like that my raspberry pi has been doing this thing lately where it just. doesn't save my wifi password. so i ssh in and update, and then watch as the ssh session dies bc it updated wpasupplicant

damn has no one really made a RISC-V Pi Zero-like device?? feels like a missed opportunity but maybe not enough people would buy them idk

is there any official way to disconnect a PDS from a relay? i've 410-d the domain, but it seems there's a few services that are still trying to hit it..

i think the two things i miss most are: - not needing to always manually call `free` - Options / Results these two things alone honestly do *so much* to even *just* code readability, i've been taking them for granted this whole time lol

i think i might've made a grave mistake learning rust before trying to learn C lol

i think i've gotten the hang of the language at this point though ๐Ÿ™‚โ€โ†•๏ธ just hard not to work in it and go "damn...an Option<T> would be *amazing* here" lol

considering tearing down the PDS on my RPi (i haven't been messing with it much lately unforch), and there's an ASN called 't4t labs' that's subscribed apparently?? kind of awesome lol

never specifically requested a crawl, but i assume relays can use the main bsky one to index a PDS somehow..? that's my only guess anyway, there's a hetzner VPS doing the same (which i assume is eurosky or the like) though they might be unsubscribed now bc of the temp 410 i was testing with lol

idk, i'll decide what to do with it at some point :p i have too many other things i'm working on, and i think my poor little pi is struggling a little hosting it if i do keep it going i might swap from rsky-pds, don't have much time to go through and try to document stuff :(

i'm sure i'll get the hang of it eventually, just not as quickly as i was hoping :P messing around with pointers is just such a foreign concept to me!

i keep a list of problems i have with GIMP, and every time i have to open the damn thing i end up adding one to the list

Chris Person@papapishu.bsky.social

GIMP is objectively unintuitive and also canโ€™t parse text layers of PSDs properly, itโ€™s designed by FOSS people that have never created tools for professionals. Telling someone to use it for their job is like saying you can make a feature on iMovie. Technically true but not serious.

admittedly i haven't added any in a while, just bc i've gotten so fucking fed up using it i started using Krita instead :p defo still has its issues, but a hell of a lot better than GIMP imo

really neat little dashboard! can defo see it coming in handy with future services (like the payment provider) down the line in particular ๐Ÿ™‚โ€โ†•๏ธ esp handy if the broader ecosystem switched over to account level settings too (like the AI prefs), but gen no clue how much of an effort for that there is so

i really like the idea of nixos, but unfortunately every time i use it i feel like I'm slamming my head into a brick wall

like I'm sorry, but learning the syntax for configuration.nix is kind of the last thing i want to do right now </3 or maybe i need to struggle with arch first to get it idk

all things considered I'd actually be perfectly happy running debian, except for the fact that I'm a KDE user, so I'd like to have updated versions of plasma :p

only now started reading through K&R C, and as weird as it feels to say, it's made me understand Rust more. like i've always intellectually understood the importance of the borrow checker and what it does, but something about reading C helps it click ๐Ÿ™‚โ€โ†•๏ธ

there's also some stuff rust does that feels clearly evolved from the 40+ years of C (Result and Option seen like two big ones, alongside some syntactic stuff) methinks rust will remain my favourite (for those reasons and more!), but i think i'll still find enjoyment in C

was intending on self hosting my own PDS via rsky-pds for a while, but that project has taken a backseat for now and is probably better served with a testing account anyway so besides, the blacksky team seems cool :)

on the one hand: starting with a pi pico is nice because the docs are super clear and comprehensive on the other hand i suspect i am now completely spoiled by the docs

part of it is definitely just a Skill Issue for not having the experience working with embedded stuff but like. damn

also was a Massive Dumbass and spent like. two days trying to make a generic spinlock function with complex traits and shit, thought it wasn't possible, until the epiphany today that i was consuming `self` instead of `&self` lol. lmao, even

learning for another time i suppose..just need to find the right resources ๐Ÿ˜ž it's been satisfying, bc i've had to put in what feels like real work to understand it all from a bunch of different places (rp235x_hal examples, embedded rust book, RISC-V ISA docs, etc), but hitting roadblocks still hurts

not that i find everything else effortless ofc but it does feel like i'm learning *computing*, and not just a protocol or whatever and so feels more generally relevant as a result; not sure how useful it actually ends up being day-to-day, but i'd like to think it'll help in future!!

yk maybe i'm naive, but releasing an (*at best*) tone-deaf AI feed generator *before* wrapping up on-protocol private data feels like A Fucking Choice, but hey

i understand these things aren't mutually exclusive, it's hard etc etc but idk. having your "Steward of Protocol" release a tool that a chunk of your users dislike before an arguably critical aspect of the protocol is perplexing to me like maybe finish up the existing walls before adding a ballroom

i still have. some things that need worked out (s3 storage, handles uh. not working out of the gate bc of cloudflare tunnel cert stuff, etc) but i can see the other side now :)

i love how easy cross compiling is on rust until it Absolutely Is Not and you spend hours trying to figure out what the fuck you're even supposed to do

(in fairness i was using diesel, which. seems like it needs to be treated Differently to cross compile nicely..) ((by Differently i mean copying over deps from the target machine lmfao))

in hopes a feed somewhere picks this up: is there writing on the env vars for rsky anywhere? curious about pds hosting, and being a rustacean i'm naturally drawn to anything written in rust lol

realise now i should've specified rsky-pds given rsky is the whole monorepo, but whatever hopefully what i meant comes across easily enough >-<

(if not then all good -- i'm bouncing between a few other projects atm so if anything it'd be a good excuse to work on those instead ๐Ÿ˜ญ)

have to admit, it's somewhat funny watching people get a chatbot to generate an entire app with no oversight, completely juxtaposed with my junior ass being too afraid to do some projects because i worry i won't be able to secure them adequately enough truly the duality of man lmfao

like. i'm not sure i'm going to go full bore and into the abyss and start deploying things (i think my concerns are not *entirely* unfounded!), but i could probably stand to at least work on the damn things :p

also might be some interesting commentary / parallels to draw there about how i feel about "ai", but i'll leave that one be methinks
