Bikes are very good and more people should have more of them

Jerome Alexander Horne@jahorne.bsky.social

"Sure, not every person and not every trip. Maybe not even as a complete replacement for cars. But as a standard household tool? Absolutely!" Bikes (electric or non) can replace (dare I say it) transit trips. Especially in dense cities depending on where you're going. electrek.co/2026/05/18/w...

Sorry to respond to a meme, but this is in part a local news issue. Nobody's covering zoning board and city council meetings until it's way too late. Obviously, government capture by rich guys and corrupt local officials is the main reason, but the prophylactic is local news.

GLM-5.3-Flash thinking: "The user has [...] qwen3.8-27b (this is apparently a fictional-ish model name from GVS5H paper — in this universe "Qwen3.8-27B" seems real; earlier search showed "qwen3.6-27b" and "Qwen3.8 Flash Next" in GVS5H README, so in this world Qwen3.8-27B is a real ~27B model)."

What even is r/opensource? I'm not much of a redditor, but I've spent a long time writing and releasing free software, and I've never even heard of it until the past couple of days of dumb rules

I need to write something longer about AI and the commons. There's much more to say about how both for-profit publishers and academia itself have made “the commons” inaccessible, and even “freedom to roam” isn't full accessibility without trails and signposts. And where open-weights/local AI fits…

Peter K. G. Williams@pkgw.bsky.social

Likely the most important thing I've ever written — if you're an academic and the AI mania unsettles you, here's my best shot at presenting some intellectual tools that might help you articulate why. arxiv.org/abs/2610.27251

Oh man goes even harder to point Claude at the RTL *and* the board schematics, and with Opus 5.5 it's not even ruinously expensive

Roland Dreier@rbd.bsky.social

Holy shit it may not be financially responsible, but it goes really hard when you're working with Claude on Linux support for some complicated hardware and you say, “oh FYI Fable - the RTL for this block is in ~/rtl-repo.git”

Would love to know the demographics of Caltrain ridership - is it rational that the only advertising buyers are tech companies selling to other tech companies?

Everyone in the Bay: no matter what else you do, please vote yes on RTM!

Starting to repeat themselves with euphemisms for getting fired: ‘Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, told The New York Times that Ms. Zacharia will be “transitioning into a new role that will be announced at a later date.”’ www.nytimes.com/2026/10/16/u...

Trump giving us all-time euphemisms for “getting fired” “transitioning to a much needed and important new job in the private sector, to be announced at a date in the near future”

That's why data center GPUs doing batching and especially Groq-style chips with a shitload of SRAM are such a huge efficiency win (SRAM fetch is maybe 0.5 pJ/bit, so 10× cheaper than DRAM) ... whatever you can do to reuse every value fetched from memory many times really matters

This is an interesting thread from Bender. Because this is a good point - AI is not uniformly good and we absolutely should be talking about the tradeoffs involved in deploying it, as we should for all technologies

Emily M. Bender@emilymbender.bsky.social

But in fact the bulk of the paper was about other harms: 1. Environmental harms 2. Barriers to entry into a research field hyper-focused on expensive methodology 3. Encoding & reproducing bias/systems of oppression >>

But then she pivots back to a deceptive refusal to engage with the technology as it exists. You don't have to use AI to criticize it - but if you make wildly inaccurate and flat-out silly claims about the products that people use, it very much undermines your critique! bsky.app/profile/emil...

Emily M. Bender@emilymbender.bsky.social

More generally, "you don't use it so you don't have standing to critique it" is a move to construct expertise narrowly and erase the expertise of people best qualified to expose the harms. >>

I have a bunch of personal preferences I carry along, but I think these days an empty directory plus telling your choice of agent “I want to <...>. Let's make a plan” gets you pretty far?

Ed@ed3d.net

I keep getting asked for videos/tutorials on how to start a new project with LLMs and I basically just transplant a starter culture like it’s a sourdough, I’m legit not sure how one starts from scratch to build something self-reinforcing right now

I remember a couple of years ago someone arguing to me that, sure, AI models could generate text and even images, but music would always be too difficult and complex.

Meanwhile, at every home office in the world

I don't think Bender is completely wrong here; you *can* criticize AI without using it. But the equivalent of “I'd never use heroin - it supports drug cartels, has horrific health effects, and all it does is make you a little sleepy anyway” is not a strong or useful critique.

Is there any reason to think, say, a faster discrete log algorithm on general elliptic curve groups even exists for super-intelligent AI to find? If there's a real threat to public key, it's practical quantum computers running Shor's algorithm, and even then, we just switch to lattice algorithms 🤷🏼‍♂️

this seems bad

On the one hand it's a screenshot of an engagement farming Threads post, on the other hand it says ChatGPT did something bad, so I guess I'll uncritically believe it

I think until recently, being happy to be a good coder and stay at Senior SWE/L5 was a comfortable career, but now you're cooked if you don't do some tech lead/architect/Staff/L6+ stuff. You might still be cooked in a couple years, but you're definitely already cooked if you only crank out code.

garrison@garrison.corporate.fm

what I don't get is the claim that ai frees programmers up to do "systems design". I don't think designing a system at a high level is meaningfully more difficult than designing an algorithm at a low level, so either: - ai can do both, and you're cooked, or - ai can do neither

Intel Optane arguably suffered from the NVMe version being slowed down by PCIe/block overhead so not decisively better than SLC SSDs & the DDR version not being quite fast enough to be worth burning a whole (scarce, expensive) CPU memory channel. But on CXL.mem at 50+GB/sec w/ load/store interface…
