Today marks 100 years since Ilford’s Charter Day, when the former district council was officially given borough status. Crowds of people came out to celebrate when the Duke and Duchess of York (later King George VI and the Queen) visited Ilford to present the official Charter of Incorporation. 📜

We’re excited to announce our next exhibition will look at Redbridge in the 1920s, exploring a decade of change in the borough and the making of the modern world. Here are some sneak peeks of what you’ll see on display – watch this space for more details!

Be sure to tune into Antiques Roadshow tonight! Our Collections Officer talks to presenter Fiona Bruce about the history of Ilford Limited and shows some of the objects and archives from our collection in this exciting episode filmed at Valentines Mansion. 📅 Sunday 18 October 🕗️ 8pm 📺️ BBC One

It's National Poetry Day - let's revisit this light-hearted poem about the work of Air Raid Precaution Wardens in Wanstead during the Second World War 👇

For @exploreyourarchive.bsky.social #ExploreYourArchive Day on #EYAHumour, here’s ‘Never Too Late’ a poem from the collection of Fred James, an amateur photographer and local joker from Wanstead who volunteered as an ARP Warden during the Second World War. Open up this thread to read! ⬇️

A classic view of Ilford High Street on this postcard from our collection, postmarked 28 September 1910. On the far left is The Angel Hotel, once a popular stop for travellers between London and Essex. You can still see the inn’s exterior close to Boots – just look up!

The men and boys in this photograph from our collection are ‘beating the bounds’ of Ilford, on this day in 1911. This was an ancient tradition where local people walked in procession around the periphery of the town or parish, hitting markers along the way to remember its physical boundaries.

On this day in 1940, the Blitz began – a fierce bombing campaign by German aeroplanes flying over Britain from September 1940 to May 1941. Here, residents of Green Lane, Ilford, enjoy breakfast in their garden the morning after an air raid on 11 September 1940. No injuries were reported.

We joined Colours of Redbridge for their ‘Here We Share’ poetry workshop at One Place Sight Support Group’s Coffee Morning earlier this week. Objects from our handling collection, including a 1930s enamel teapot, 1912 Kodak Vest Pocket camera, and a 1960s Barbie doll served as prompts for the poems!

These costumes were made by Joyce Guy who moved to Ilford from Trinidad in 1958. Joyce made food and costumes for the Ebony steel band who performed at Notting Hill Carnival in the 1970s. Here they are on display in our 2004 exhibition ‘Carnival!’ 🥁 Enjoy the weekend!
