Turning off social media algorithms for users by default is a key way we can tackle the spread of harmful content. It was originally in Coimisiún na Meáin's online safety code, and it makes perfect sense. The government are once again dragging their heels. We need to see action.

Again, to be clear, the “Online safety for children” policy Ireland is advancing is just the Meta proposal to evade regulation and increase surveillance.

Hey, now doesn't that sound awfully familiar to some of the guff said at a few of the protests?

Went to Infowars just to see if The Onion's takeover had happened yet. Live broadcast right now is about Ireland, where anchor says it's a shame that the Irish diaspora in America are not being mobilised to stop the population being. I quote, "completely replaced by a giant swath of third-worlders".

During the Great Famine, John Milton Niles of Connecticut declared in the U.S. Senate that “Charity begins at home" as he argued against the U.S. Government sending direct aid to Ireland during the Great Famine. The ignorance and selfishness of this ‘protest’ is beyond belief.

"We've a Government here that's giving away millions and millions...we should look after our own people first - then help other countries," says John Dallon, a farmer and agriculture contractor. #VMNews

Financial barriers to environmental litigation are against the law, because protecting the environment is an important public interest. The government now wants to make it super expensive (>€100,000) for ordinary people to go to court to protect the environment Please read and take action 👇

I 100% endorse this message. The spoiled votes are a 3rd or 4th order story in this election and disproportionate attention and airtime is a measure of the level of editorial discomfort with talking about Connolly’s success and FF/FG failure.

Philip O'Connor@philipoconnor.bsky.social

Catherine Connolly got more votes than any other president in history - any pol corr or commentator trying to convince you that the story is actually the spoiled votes is showing you their whole arse, and should be treated accordingly.

Big tech promotes the story that since ChatGPT burst onto the scene, AI has been so popular it's rushed to meet the demand. The reality is different. A study by design scholars shows tech co's have had to push AI on its users with a variety of intrusive tactics. How big tech is force-feeding us AI:

bloodinthemachine.comHow big tech is force-feeding us AIPlus, OpenAI's absurd listening tour, top AI scientists say AI is evolving beyond our control, Facebook is putting data centers in tents, and the AI bubble question — answered?

Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

By coincidence I was passing Tuam today as the hoarding went up around the Mother & Baby Home site. A discreet and respectful veil. It’s 11 years since I took this photo of Catherine Corless at her kitchen table. I rang her today just to say hi. 🧵

So not only are their ideas blatant libertarian / randian shite. They also either a) believe everyone is a gullible idiot or are b) gullible idiots themselves

The founder of Progress Ireland insists he is free from the ideological influence of his funders, who are all very right wing. He also says these funders don't want any influence over Progress Ireland, they're just funding it cause they believe in the project so much! Isn't that just peachy for all

You are up to date.
