I have developed a fascination with Deadlock. I love u pigeon grandma. #baba #deadlock #fanart

it's "doggy dog world" it's "diamond dozen" it's "intensive purposes" it's "taken for granite"

We acknowledge that no one has the bandwidth for this, but if it helps: -It’s β€˜sleight of hand’ -It’s β€˜bated breath’ -It’s β€˜lo and behold’ -It's 'buck naked' -It’s β€˜brass tacks’ -It’s β€˜free rein’ -It’s β€˜toe the line'

GAME 15/100: King's Field or king's field 2 in japan. but just king's field in the west! it's one of those confusing cases where the first game was released only in japan and was never localized. anyway, king's field! fromsoft's second game ever

GAME 14/100: Final Fantasy VIII okay, big one! this is the first ps1 final fantasy i've played, though i have played entries in the series on other platforms. let me just come right out the gate and say that while i had a decent time with it, i do not think this is a good game

the gameplay is simple but has depth, and i really appreciate it for that. there were plenty of frustrating moments and i used save states for at least two moments (minecarts are just a gamble on whether they'll kill you or not...) but this game is a proper adventure, and i love it

i am really curious about king's field 3 and 4 now! and the shadow tower series as well. i think the basic game presented here has a lot of potential and i can see how it spawned so many "kf-inspired" games, and how it relates to souls. also shoutouts to the pogging blue face enemy, love that guy

upgrading magic lets you explore more areas, such as getting fire resist for the fire cave. but... you don't need that magic! if you're inventive you can find your own way through these areas. i just tanked the fireballs and chugged flasks for example

speaking of flasks, there's a lot of later fromsoft-isms that originated here. your crystal flasks are limited but you can refill them with healing as much as you like. sounds familiar, right? it's primitive estus flasks! illusory walls are everywhere, there's a prominent character called seath...

you get multiple maps throughout the game, but i actually never really used them. there were definitely times where i felt lost, but whenever i did i usually stumbled upon something i'd missed before when i was trying to find my way back. the world interconnects in a very fromsoft way

you'll find yourself going on a huge detour through a new area and end up emerging from it in an area you've already explored and are familiar with. combat is really simple and yet has some cool tricks to it, such as strafing around enemies and the old "poke and run" technique

the same goes for armor and weapons. you just kinda have to remember what your stats looked like before and after you equipped it to compare. you don't ever get descriptions or stats!

i'm coming out of the gate with my complaints because i think most everything else that king's field does is actually really good. the environments look extremely simple and samey, and yet fromsoft made them fun to explore and memorable.

the game is extremely janky and has some obtuse logic that might require you pull up a guide. the menus are cumbersome to navigate and while there are shortcuts - such as binding your flasks to a shortcut to fill them up quick instead of one by one - they're kinda hidden

whenever you find a new item, you pretty much just have to guess what it does. "blood stone"? why, it cures your ailments, of course. "demon's pick"? contrary to what you might expect, it doesn't pick doors or let you challenge the devil to a rock-off. it gives you +30 max mp! duh

so, funny thing, "king's field inspired" indie games i've played are some of my absolute favorites (i love you lunacid), but i've never actually played king's field. this was a genuine "huge king's field fan plays king's field for the first time" situation
