In 2019 I decided I wanted to read all the Marvel comics* starting from Fantastic Four #1 onward. I've been reading on and off and I'm up to around 1979 on most titles. Follow if you want to hear my random musings about comics, TTRPGS, and other geekery.

The New York Times won't call this man a racist.

Trump on El-Sayed: "His name is actually Abduladadalalalala. It's Adulbabababababa Mohammed Al-Sayed. So his middle name is Mohammed. So I was right. He's a jihadist."

Wage theft is theft. Tenant harassment is illegal. Those who defraud vulnerable New Yorkers will be held accountable. We are working with Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg to share real-time information and crack down on crimes that target workers and consumers.

This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days. ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.

As a GM, I'm not saying that certain character classes attract certain types of people and behaviour. But I'm smart enough to know the differences between the group that rolls a cleric, paladin, wizard, and ranger compared to the one that rolls the bard, rogue, barbarian, and sorcerer. #d&d

I'm rewatching the Hobbit/LOTR movies, and it's amazing how many things are bred for a single purpose, and it's always war. Just once, it'd be fun for a wizard or orc lord to speak in foreboding terms about a race of red pandas, bred for a single purpose. To be adorable.

Sometimes movies give you a line that you would swear was inspired by something that happened at a gaming table. From The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, said resignedly by the leader of the protagonist group following a terse, yet ignored, explanation of the stealthy plan:

I'm updating my homebrew world for 5E and trying to come up with descriptors of monk styles that match the great spirits of the animistic pantheon. Firefly, Elephant, and Tree style were all fairly easy. But it's going to get harder as I go. #gmproblems #D&D5E

I'm working on converting my homebrew to 5E in preparation for running a game, and this means going through a bunch of old notes to get organized (it's been a while). I just found my notes on the minotaur pirate island, and I am still amused by the idea of vikings that come with their own horns.

The vast majority of people are very bad liars. A very few people are naturally good liars, and many people are very practised liars, but most people are unable to mask deception, keep their stories consistent, and avoid tripping red flags while being questioned.

What's something that experts/practitioners in your field universally agree upon, but that remains a "hot take" among the general public?

In all seriousness though, elder millennial jokes aside, I think it’s important to resist the media framing of any mainstream resistance to the status quo as just the shrill nonsense of middle-aged women with nothing better to do. This isn’t the first time they’ve run out this playbook.

One of my favourite things in the comics is when one side of a fight is clearly outmatched, but both sides are still taking the pre-fight dialog very secretly. Like, threaten all you want, but the Hulk and Thor are on this side, and you appear to be run of the mill minions, so ...

Question for #comicsky. I'm a big fan of the way Wasp is written in Avengers EMH. Can anyone recommend a Wasp run that I might also enjoy? I've generally been reading older comics and the writing for Wasp is as bad, if not worse than other female superheroes.

I think one of my favourite things about Avengers EMH is how new characters constantly appear without the writers feeling obligated to drag the story to a halt while they introduce them by name, describe their powers, and explain their origins.

So during COVID, I had the idea to start reading as many Marvel comics as I could from the beginning of the superhero age (FF #1). When I started doing this, I looked for podcasts from people who had done or tried similar things. There were some, but not as many as I'd have thought.

Then I realized that these are also people who started doing this around the same time as me, and that's why these podcasts exist now. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it's not easy being a trend-setting avatar of the zeitgeist. Also, I like comic book podcasts.

If I was going to hire a mercenary to go after the Hulk for me, I'd probably look for a psychic or maybe someone who can turn themselves into gas or electricity. I wouldn't choose someone whose whole deal is grappling people. It goes as well as you'd expect for Temu Dr. Octopus (Constrictor).
