1/6 Hello, BlueSky! 👋End-of-life care is a mosaic crafted from shards of memory, grief, and transition. Want to know what inspired me to help the dying and their circles of care navigate the journey with dignity and intention? Read on for a look at my journey. 🧵 #deathdoula #endoflifeplanning

I'm halfway through reading "Still Here" by Ram Dass. It's a different and complementary flavor to what I've read so far as I lean into this work, and I'm really enjoying it. The part that's stuck with me so far is this fallible but optimistic argument: 🧵 1/3

"To be here for fifty to eighty years only to be annihilated at the end just doesn't make sense. Nothing else in the universe is that inefficient. We have to be here to learn; otherwise our difficulties are truly meaningless." 2/3

Still soaking in these final chapters, but viewing aging and mortality as a curriculum rather than decay hit and stuck with me; I keep thinking back on it. As a humanist & hopeful agnostic, I will keep this. Has anyone else read it? What resonated most? 📖 #BookSky #DeathDoula #DeathPositive

Just reached out to an author whose work is shaping my doula practice. Now I get to sit in the quiet limbo of waiting to hear back. 🥹 🤞 Detaching from the outcome is tough, but sincere gratitude is always worth the vulnerability. Ever hit send and held your breath? 🤍 #BuildInPublic #DeathDoula

For National Estate Planning Awareness Week, let's talk about your wishes. 🤍 I help AZ families complete and file their advance directives (Living Wills & POAs) with the AZ Healthcare Directives Registry (AzHDR). DM me to get started! #EstatePlanningAwarenessWeek #AdvanceCarePlanning #Phoenix

1/2 Today is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Remembrance Day. 🕯️ And at 7:00 PM local time, the Wave of Light honors these losses that are too often carried in silence as disenfranchised grief. Your grief is real, your loss matters, and you are not alone. 🤍 🧵 #WaveOfLight #DisenfranchisedGrief

2/2 Given that one in 4 pregnancies ends in loss, we've all been touched by this. To help memorialize loss and normalize grief, light a candle tonight at 7:00 PM for one hour to become part of the Wave of Light. More information is available here: buff.ly/SLaHTuP #GriefSupport

Midway through LGBTQIA2S+ History Month, a vital reminder: hospitals don't recognize chosen family by default. In a medical crisis, state laws grant decision-making authority strictly to biological kin—legally locking out unmarried partners and trusted loved ones. 🧵 #LGBTQHistoryMonth

Safeguarding your people takes two key documents: 1. Healthcare POA: Legally designates who speaks for you 2. Living Will: Outlines your care and comfort wishes Advance planning isn't just red tape—it's protection for chosen family and autonomy. 🏳️‍🌈 2/2 #ChosenFamily #EndOfLifePlanning #LGBTQCare

It’s National Freethought Week—a great time to talk about secular dying. As a reminder: no religious dogma is needed to have a meaningful, intentional, and peaceful end of life. Your values, identity, and story are enough on their own. 🤍 #Freethought #SecularGrief #Humanism #DeathDoula

The national conversation around end-of-life care is shifting. It was deeply validating to hear NPR's recent segment on the rising demand for death doulas. People are realizing that dying doesn't have to be a strictly clinical, isolating experience. 🧵 #DeathDoula #EndOfLifeCare #DeathPositivity

Highlights of #PhoenixPride yesterday: 1. Walking the parade w/my amazing wife, @robinmarie2.bsky.social, & the powerful youth group from OneNTen 2. Giving free dad hugs in the wild 3. Scoping out and gathering contacts for future work You are all enough. You all matter. #pride #ally

The Giver (a staple in our Little Free Library) remains frequently challenged for confronting hard truths: memory, pain, and mortality. In eliminating suffering, its world sanitized death into "Release," erasing grief, love, and choice. 🧵 1/2 #BannedBooksWeek #TheGiver #BookSky

My work as a doula is anchored in the belief that choice equals dignity. Sanitizing mortality protects no one. Honoring every story means holding space for the "awkward choreography of being a human." as @alokvmenon.bsky.social once shared. 🤍 2/2 #DeathDoula #BannedBooksWeek #DeathPositivity

As @alokvmenon.bsky.social reminds us "Welcome to the awkward choreography of being a human." All these truths are steps in the dance of life that ends the same for all of us. There is no way around this truth or the human pain of its consequences.

"Lived experiences heard: real voices, real change" is the theme for this year's World Mental Health Day. Take a moment to inventory one thing about your life you want others to know or remember after you're gone from this earth. 🌎️ #deathpositive #WorldMentalHealthDay

Caring for aging parents while raising kids? Caregiver burnout is real; your fatigue is valid. 🌿 Protecting your mental health isn't selfish—it's essential. This World Mental Health Day, give yourself grace. 🤍 #CaregiverSupport #WorldMentalHealthDay #SandwichGeneration

Toni Morrison's 'Beloved' remains one of the most challenged books in America, yet its exploration of ancestral grief & historical trauma is unmatched. Grief isn't just individual. It lingers and moves through generations. 🧵 1/2 #BannedBooks #DeathDoula #Grief

Unspoken historical loss lingers like a ghost. In end-of-life care, honoring legacy means making room for the hard stories our ancestors carried. If you've had experience acknowledging ancestral grief or family legacy in your own life, let us know about it in comments. 🕯️ 2/2 #Beloved #GriefSupport

Grief isn't always quiet—sometimes sudden trauma demands a movement. Angie Thomas' 'The Hate U Give' centers on the sudden loss of a Black teenager & how a community mourns through collective trauma. 🧵 1/2 #BannedBooks #DeathDoula #Grief

Banning books like this doesn't protect youth from loss; it deprives them of language for violent grief. Holding space for community trauma is essential care. If this book impacted your understanding of grief, let us know in the comments, please. 🤍 2/2 #TheHateUGive #GriefSupport

Banned book highlight: "Tuck Everlasting" by Natalie Babbitt. 🌿 Often challenged for themes of death, this classic reflects a core truth of doula care: mortality gives life meaning, and death is a natural cycle—not something to fear or censor. #BannedBooksWeek #DeathDoula #DeathPositive

Today's 2nd #BannedBooksWeek highlight: "More Happy Than Not", also by Adam Silvera. 🤍. It deeply explores disenfranchised grief: suicide loss, closeted heartbreak, and the urge to erase trauma. Banning books like this doesn't protect readers; it just isolates those carrying unspeakable pain.

As a #DeathDoula, I hold space for losses that society tries to ignore. Grief doesn't disappear just because it makes others uncomfortable. We honor the living and the dead by refusing to censor grief. If this (or any other) book has helped you navigate an unacknowledged loss, let me know

Today's first of two #BannedBooksWeek highlights: "They Both Die at the End" by Adam Silvera. 📖 I love that this is on @en3myp1nkk.bsky.social annual reading list! Following two queer teens on their last day, it shows how facing mortality forces us to live with total authenticity. 🧵 1/2

It also allows us to plan with intention, cherish chosen family, and live fully right now. As death doulas, our priority is to ensure that each dying person's story and identity are fully witnessed. 🤍 2/2 #DeathDoula #LGBTQ #DeathPositive

Post 1/3 For #BannedBooksWeek, I'll share titles that are often banned because their content presents inconvenient truths about death, dying, and grief. Starting us off, I'm nostalgic to share the most impactful book of my young life: "Bridge to Terabithia" by Katherine Paterson. 🌿🧵

Post 2/3 I remember that I had just turned 9 when my grandfather bought it for me on a visit to a small, local bookstore. Reading it moved me in a way I hadn't yet learned a book could, or that I even had words for at the time #BannedBooksWeek #DeathDoula #GriefSupport

Post 3/3 Frequently challenged for confronting sudden childhood loss, this classic shows how grief breaks us open. We can't shield people from loss—we can only walk beside them in it. My signed hardcover copy remains among my most valued possessions.

Scott Burnam reposted

In 2025, 39% of challenged books represent the lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ people and people of color. This isn't just censorship. It's an attack on our communities! Read banned books. Help us continue fighting for equal access to knowledge. 🏳️‍🌈📚

Not big on selfies (#GenX lol) but with a birthday on the horizon, why not? Working with mortality teaches you to wear bright colors, celebrate getting older, & savor being right here, right now. Grateful for another trip around the sun! ☀️ #SundaySelfPortrait #DeathDoula #EndOfLifePlanning

Post 1/2 In Arizona, green burials skip embalming fluids and vaults, allowing bodies to naturally return to the earth. But that's not the only eco-option available to us here. 🧵 #greenburial

AZ legally permits biodegradable shrouds, water cremation (aquamation), and recently, human composting (natural #organic reduction). Choosing these leaves a profoundly lighter footprint. Have you considered an #eco-friendly legacy? 🌿 #deathpositivity

Currently reading Briefly, Perfectly Human by Alua Arthur, and the quote deeply resonated with me. It captures the heartbeat of why I want to do this work: everyone deserves to be truly seen and valued, especially as they approach the end of life. 🤍 #deathdoula #bookstagram #amreading

Common question: Do I need a doula if I already have hospice? Hospice provides essential medical, nursing, and clinical care. Doulas offer non-medical emotional, practical, and holistic support—working alongside hospice to keep your wishes centered. 🤍 #deathdoula #hospice #endoflifeplanning

Post 1/3 October is around the corner and that means new space for pro bono work is available! If you or someone you love needs a little extra professional support right now, I can help. AND - all these services work well as online meetings, so you don't even need to be in/near Phoenix! 🧵👇

Post 2/3 I can give away exactly ONE of each of these services this month: If you or someone you know will be passing: 📋 1x Planning Session 🌳 1x Legacy Project Support Session If you and others have recently suffered a loss: 🤝 1x Family Support Session #ProBono #DeathDoula #EndOfLife

3/3 If one of these would be helpful for your current situation, go to www.reverentridge.org (linked in my bio) to reach out. No requests through DMs, please! If you know someone else who could benefit, please tag them or share this thread! ✨ #GriefSupport #Legacy #Planning

Lured by #nostalgia, my wife and I invested 15 cents each for a piece of Bazooka bubblegum while we were out today, mostly to see if there’s still a #comic in each piece. Good news: there is! Bad news: pretty sure AI is writing them now. #Dammit, @bazookajoe! Is nothing sacred? #AIFails 🙈🙅‍♂️

Post 1/2 So to recap: disenfranchised grief is real. It matters to name it because its pain is often compounded by a lack of validation. The grieving person doesn't just lose something or someone; they also lose access to the rituals, support systems, and social permission that help them heal.🧵

Post 2/2 They may feel ashamed for grieving, or even gaslit into thinking they “shouldn't be so upset”. So let’s just agree: grief doesn't require social permission to exist. The absence of someone else's approval doesn't make the loss less devastating to experience. #griefsupport #deathdoula

A quiet moment at the threshold of day. Simply sharing the sunrise is a reminder of how natural transitions can be when we allow ourselves to sit quietly and witness them. Are you creating space for quiet moments in your week? #DeathDoula #GriefSupport #Sunrise #QuietMoments #CatsOfBluesky

Not all grief gets a card, flowers, or a funeral. Disenfranchised grief happens when society doesn't recognize or validate your loss, leaving you to mourn in silence. Your pain is real, even when the world doesn't name it. 🧵 1/3 #disenfranchisedgrief #griefsupport #deathdoula

What does disenfranchised grief look like? • Loss of chosen family or non-traditional partners • Miscarriage or pregnancy loss • Death of an ex, friend, or estranged relative • Pet loss • Loss of health, identity, or safety. Every type of loss deserves space to be felt. 2/3 #grief #lgbtq

As an death doula, I hold compassionate, non-judgmental space for all your losses. You shouldn't have to justify your grief to deserve support. We'll finish this series tomorrow with a look at why naming it matters, and what the emotional toll looks like. 3/3 #deathdoula #queergrief #griefsupport
