Welcome to all our new followers! 💛 We're Reunite Families UK, and we exist for one reason: no one should be kept apart from the people they love because of what they earn. 🧵

When immigration rules get tougher, British citizens pay the price too. On @lbc.co.uk, our Head of Policy Matteo Besana explains how earned settlement would hit British families, tax migrants twice and make a care worker’s child wait 15 years while a banker’s child waits 3.

A time to be introduced to the family – and to a great-grandfather who is too ill to travel. A chance for cuddles, connection and memories that would last a lifetime. But William’s mother has been refused a visa to visit the UK. A special family Christmas, taken away before it could even begin.

At Reunite Families UK, we see stories like this all the time. Families refused visit visas. Children separated from parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and other loved ones. Precious moments lost that can never be replaced.

The cost, the uncertainty and the mental stress are real, and too many people don't know it's happening. That's why they're out spreading the word. 📣 Thank you both for sharing your story so honestly 🧡

"All we want is for families and couples to be together. It's not much to ask." 💔 Our second day at Labour Conference is coming to a close, but first we caught up with Abdul and Leslie, two of our Reunite Families UK members, to hear why they came. 🧵

If the earned settlement proposals go ahead, they're looking at 10 years before they can settle, with £5,000–6,000 in visa fees every two and a half years. That means constantly saving for the next visa instead of living their lives.

And with Leslie reaching retirement in 10 years, and Abdul working on minimum wage, their future together could be put at risk. As Abdul says, people think it's easy, but it's not.

Out in the sunshine spreading the word ☀️🧡 We caught up with Cassandra, one of our Reunite Families members, who's been handing out flyers and talking to people all day at the Labour Party conference.

We're here to make sure people understand two things: 🔸 How current spouse visa rules are already keeping families apart across the UK 🔸 How the proposed earned settlement changes will hit people who work here, contribute to our NHS and keep key services running, as well as spouse visa holders

These policies have real-life impacts on real families. People deserve to know what's coming. 📣 Thank you Cassandra, and everyone who took the time to talk to MPs and other delegates about the visa rules 🙏 Sign our letter to the PM: actionnetwork.org/petitions/te...

Standing outside Labour Conference today, it struck me how many people inside are completely unaware that families are being torn apart by these policies. They'll enjoy their day at the conference, then go home to their families. Meanwhile, thousands of people can't live here in the UK as a family

Woman on a mission 💪 Today our co-founder Caroline is joining members of Reunite Families UK and an amazing coalition of organisations, all coming together to push back against the government's earned settlement proposals. These plans are short-sighted and will hurt families, workers and communities

Nobody warns you about this at freshers' week. 🧵 You're 18, starting uni, and you meet someone who makes everything feel possible. But if they're not British, you may need to earn £29,000 a year just to live here together.

Many graduates start well below that. So couples spend years apart. Careers get planned around visa paperwork. Dreams go on hold. And most students don't find out until they're already in love.

It's called the Minimum Income Requirement, and it's an unnecessary burden on people at the very start of their adult lives. No one should have to choose between the person they love and the country they call home.

£5 BILLION(!) in profits for the UK government from visa, immigration, citizenship fees. Much of this is sucking blood from the most vulnerable.

Brexit sadly expanded the number of people affected by this policy, but didn't change its basic nature: a policy that keeps people apart, makes love unaffordable for most, and needs to change as soon as possible.

The letter also rightly highlights the Home Office's inscrutable decision-making and the sheer cost involved - unaffordable for most of us, and one that still doesn't guarantee people the chance to live with their loved ones in their country of birth or where they have lived for a long time.

The tens of thousands of pounds our members and people across the country must spend just to maintain their status or acquire citizenship isn't just a burden — it blocks integration and thriving, and stands as an impossibly high stumbling block to the economy.

We’re tired of having to repeat time and again of the consequences of these fees. Not just financially but mentally as well with children being the biggest victims of it all.

Great to see @tuc.org.uk speak out against earned settlement You don't beat the far right by pandering to it, but by tackling what drives people to them Scapegoating migrants won't fix the cost of living crisis. We need solutions for our communities, not more hate www.theguardian.com/politics/202...
