CBC’s municipal election coverage really needs to stop referring to houses as “homes” and apartments/condos as “buildings”. They’re all homes.

Once polls close in an election, the facts of the vote count are set. Don’t believe any “the race continues” narratives when vote counting happens. The race is over. Just wait until 100% of he ballots are counted. (Or, these days, a projection is made.) Only after then is it over.

Election night means hearing only partial speeches. TV could to the thing that baseball broadcasts do, which is not show everything strictly live, but they could show the whole thing.

Now that the polls are closed, I can report that my MPP (who’s every left-wing, and whom I support strongly) and Olivia Chow herself called me with pre-recorded messages, and I got a web poll sent to me by SMS (which felt like a push poll for OC), and a door-knocking crew made sure I voted for OC.

Having already lost my “I VOTED” sticker, I went back to the polling station (which happened to be the same venue as my evening swimming lesson) and stated my case, stuck strictly to the facts, and before I could even ask the poling agent for a replacement, he offered me as many as I wanted.

When my dad ran for mayor of my hometown, he and my family all felt like shit after the polls closed, partly because he lost, but mostly because we, including me, forgot to eat dinner that night.

Do I know anybody who’d be interested in this? The science fiction writers that follow me, I’m looking in your direction.

We're looking for volunteers to help us judge the sixth Self-Published Science Fiction Competition. spsfc.space/2026/10/26/j... If you're not entering a novel in the contest when that opens on Nov. 1, we'd love you to join one of our judging teams. #SPSFC

Good.

Good luck to those I know who are running in the B.C. provincial election tomorrow!

Mind the setting about “Deep Search” as well (Jennifer does point that out later). Libby is in the category of software that I hate because of its UI and shit like this, but, on the other hand, which other app am I getting free audiobooks through the public library system?

Good luck to those I know who are running in B.C. local elections tomorrow, including my dad, who’s running for Councillor in my hometown. bsky.app/profile/cana...

It’s looking a lot like my dad did not meet the threshold to get elected as Councillor. I hear that it was heralded as a “throw the bums out” election and that was a mixed bag: 2 incumbent Councillors won, but the incumbent Mayor is out, and so is one of the (disgraced) Councillors.

I talked to my dad today and he thinks the people of my hometown elected a “status quo” council. The newly-elected Mayor ran on a “we need to shake things up at City Hall” platform, as did one of the elected Councillors (as did my dad) but, alas.

Vancouver Island and its neighbors have 28 lighthouses between them. The big stations sweep, smaller lights blink on the rhythm printed on the chart. Fisgard and Race Rocks, lit in 1860, were the first two on Canada's west coast. Data: OpenStreetMap, NGA, Coast Guard #VancouverIsland #Lighthouses

It’s looking a lot like the dingus Mayor of Vancouver has been turfed, and an incumbent Councillor I’ve long admired for reasons other than being a Councillor can count on re-election. Yay!

The polls have closed in B.C. local elections. If you’re a candidate, make sure you eat something in the next little while. My dad ran for mayor of my hometown and my family all felt like shit, partly because he lost, but mostly because we, including me, forgot to eat dinner that night.
