I'm working today in the bright beautiful ground floor reading room of the Brooklyn Heights Library and it is truly glorious but the other woman at my table is doing a ZOOM? LOUDLY? in a LIBRARY? breaking literally the ONE SOCIAL RULE OF PUBLIC SPACES THAT REMAINS IN FORCE?

I have gotten a zillion outreaches* about the DSA elections from friends and acquaintances who want me to vote for them or someone else and the whole thing seems so confusing and intimidating that I’m just curled up in bed with a sack of Riesen ignoring them

Whenever I encounter someone under ~23 speaking English in an identifiable accent very different from mine (like Irish, although South Effrican or Philly or Detroit illustrates just as well), my unconscious reaction is always “oh they’re still making more of you?” Which is RIDIC

Since we are Discoursing this week about schools noticing kids have fallen behind, I’m duty-bound to report that in first grade in my public school in 1972 my teacher apparently reported to the authorities that I was uncoordinated and I was given personal SKIPPING lessons at public expense

Specifically: some sort of recreational therapist was duly dispatched from LA Unified Area J HQ to pull me and one other kid out onto the deserted “big yard” (the asphalt playground the older kids used) during class time to teach us how to skip without looking like Big Bird, with limited success

Ground beef, one of the few things almost every cash-strapped household in America can tell you the price of, hasn’t been at $2 a pound in literally twenty years. It’s *up* by $2 (to around $7) in the past two years. Maybe that’s what he meant?

Emmer says Republicans need to talk more about grocery prices that aren't expensive: "Eggs are at pre-pandemic prices. Ah, beef is at, ah, less than $2 a pound for ground beef ... I think we have a lot to run on."

someone in my building got 83 packages delivered today, they filled up one of those gigantic Amazon delivery cubes, the doorman has to log each one individually into BuildingLink and looks like he is on the verge of a heart attack

Half my FB feed is ads for AI task managers and agentic personal assistants offering to do things I wouldn’t even outsource to a human let alone an agent, how is this sustainable

My 17-year-old nephew in the reddish-purple exurbs of Grand Rapids, who I do not think of as particularly politically engaged, not only follows Mamdani on social media but actually watches his content This is so interesting to me

At the Kips Bay AMC public hearing at Manhattan CB6 and I must say it sure sounds like NYU Langone Health deliberately concealed its plans from the community

Another member of the public calling out NYU Langone for deliberate secrecy about this — they have really struck a nerve, this is shaping up to be a significant misstep

Had to use Find My to actually find something I lost… and it worked! It led me right up to the counter of a cafe I’d been in 2 hours earlier, which indeed had found my keys

Now a man complaining that there are too many loud ambulances a block from a row of hospitals, including a gigantic 289-year-old hospital that’s been operating at this location since 1798

Ok but first public speaker is a woman complaining that nobody publicized this meeting and mad that a thing nobody knew about wasn’t addressed months earlier

now someone complaining that NYU, a giant health system that serves the whole city, has too big a footprint, and then someone complaining it should pay property taxes

I played Cards Against Humanity for the first time and …is that it? Like it was fine, but …maybe you have to be high and/or today’s date has to be earlier than 2016?

Ordering cocktails at brunch in Woodstock and they asked “what vodka” and the first one on the list was “Albany” and we were like what but then i looked it up and it’s apparently world-class

My nephew is visiting from Michigan and he’s explaining school shooting drills like it’s totally normal and like how do we as a society tolerate this appalling situation

We opened the little sunglasses compartment in the Hertz rental car to find 2 single-serving packets of “Analyse Me” brand silicone lubricant and a plastic packet of male performance-enhancing ginseng honey both presumably purchased at the counter of a gas station

Taxi driver caught me snapping a pic of his violation and he opened the door and yelled WE KNOW YOU! WE ALL KNOW YOU! WE HAVE YOUR PICTURE! GO FUCK YOURSELF! I was like, ok, enjoy your summons

He then followed me for 3 blocks and cornered me and asked "what I get" for reporting safety violations to the TLC and absolutely WOULD NOT ACCEPT "nothing" as an answer no matter how times I said it

Oh and he also argued with me about whether he had to stop at the stop line and I said "if you don't have to stop at the stop line, then why do you think the TLC keeps prosecuting these violations"

(The "go fuck yourself" would earn him a second summons if I reported it but I don't care whether drivers are nice, just want them to stay behind the stop line)

as someone who grew up under the blasting pavement-roasting heat of the San Fernando Valley and then moved East I can tell you that all the people I grew up with including my parents would have walked in front of an oncoming train if they had to contend with humidity
