Mine is 2. Spoke with Valerie Jarrett on a health care thing.

Mine is 1, though barely. We grabbed the tips of each other's fingers during a rope line in 2015. I was three rows back and standing on my tippy toes. He was whisked away quite soon. Then VP Biden came and stayed for a good hour taking photos and giving out hugs to EVERYONE.

Abnormally, potentially record-breaking temperatures will impact southern California and stretch north toward the Bay Area and Central Valley through next week.

Oh for… Look, I get it - you’ve sweated over every concept, phrase, and comma to make your submission perfect and your tired brain vapor locks at the β€˜include a brief cover letter’ submission requirement. But COME ON. Someone who claims to write a short story should be able to write a cover letter.

Yeahhhh don't do this:

I want people WITH skills to build cars, houses, roads and bridges…. As for wanting to do something creative β€˜unrestrained by skills’ that’s called a beginner. No one is stopping you from learning the piano, dude. But you can’t sit at one that plays the keys for you and claim you’re an expert.

increasingly it seems like the only real answer to this is to find ways of ensuring guaranteed income for people. imo we are reaching a point where people who want to build or do things will be able to - unrestrained by skills - and there will be a lot of people who will no longer need to work

We live on the East-West flight approach to O’Hare airport, which is busy 24/7. Taking the dog for her last walk late at night in 2001, I realized the sky was *silent*; no planes nearby landing, none taking off. Just… eerie quiet. It’s never completely still in Chicago, but this was scary close.

25 years ago, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were taken in terrorist attacks that forever changed our nation. We remember the first responders who ran toward danger to save lives. We mourn with the families who will forever carry the weight of that tragic day. We will never forget.

The Detroit River. No one not local understood the current, and how bootlegging back when was dicey even in the coldest weeks of Winter.

RT with your home river. I grew up in a village on the Wey, sometimes we'd hire a rowing boat on summer afternoons and dad would row us between green banks. Now its the Gwendraeth, shorter, more of a mountain river, home to otters and egrets.

I walked two of my Muslim colleagues to their cars after work for an entire week to help keep them safe. Only reason I didn’t continue is all the β€˜lightish brown’ folks started parking together in the row closest to the building so their cars would be monitored and they could walk out together.

There are already articles circulating trying to rewrite history and say America was great after 9/11 and united and thoughtful and just a reminder that that period was marked by intense and insanely racist hatred, paranoia, and a frothing desire for unhinged violence and oppression.

What jumps out at me amongst the Nazi apologia is the Holocaust Denier who claims any deaths should be attributed only to disease and starvation, not what Nazis did β€˜directly’. If you have someone in your custody and refuse to feed them so they die from starvation? That’s direct action. See: ICE.

The number of people still seemingly unaware that Substack has a Nazi problem means it’s apparently worth mentioning yet again that Substack has a fucking Nazi problem.

Attention, #IL03! We have received reports of ICE activity in our district. Stay safe! The best way to protect ourselves is by knowing our rights. If you have a neighbor or loved one detained by ICE or need help with a federal agency, contact my office at (773) 799-8219.

Enjoying a wee dram (or several) of the Wiser’s Green tonight. I might not be able to get it south of the Border any more… so when this bottle is done that may be the end. (Note to self: calculate flight costs to/from easy spot in Canada versus Duty Free…)

One of our fave easy dinners tonight… a can of low-sodium black beans, a small can of no salt added corn, chopped carrots, celery and white onion, a chopped pepper (tonight was yellow and I charred it first) with a big handful of fresh cilantro and a big dump of cumin, with diced chicken.

Shredded or diced pork or beef also works well, and the veggies rotate by what’s in the fridge. I serve it with whatever cheese is available (tonight was hunks of mozzarella cheese sticks) a hefty squirt of sriracha and a squeeze of sour cream, diced green onion on top. It’s easy, cheap and yummy.
