this also goes for indies btw, which is why the 30% cut steam takes is so egregious. that 30% is often the difference between one and done, or a studio that gets to make a second and maybe third game. and it would cost them literally nothing to take no cut for the first 100k, it's a rounding error

Most studios that generate an overnight hit are actually on the 3rd or 4th title. Blizzard, Larian, Arrowhead, these places had several games under their belts before their first true blockbuster. Like George RR Martin they had been grinding XP for years before becoming a household name.

strange times of everything I used to love and appreciate dying. can't tell if it's particularly specific to the current times or simply the process of aging and generational change

man, the original Mass Effect trilogy is some of my favorite games of all time, I've played through at least three times throughout the years.what a sad end to a once great studio.

I wish I could express all of the things I think should be done to the people who write this kind of software on any platform.

No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

I'm back, I missed you all. Since this is an important subject I know too much about, here's a 🧵 explaining that AI Safety Is Mostly A Sex Cult. I don't think these people should make policy. (1/?) (alternative title: Time For Some Cult Theory)

hearing a game dev give a talk about indie success say that his wife pays for everything so that he can keep making games full-time has really inspired me to find a wife who pays for everything so i can make indie games full-time

I'm not sure why people are so resistant to the idea that Steam shouldn't take 30% flat tax both from small time indies and EA/Ubisofts/etc of the world. They, in fact, give discounts to AAA after $10/50mil revenue down to 25/20% respectively. But 15% for indies under $1mil? Preposterous!

Especially, when Valve derives most of its profit from AAA. It would be a rounding error to their bottom line to give indies a break in funding starved industry where the average professional remains for roughly 5 years.
