The Crucible, a longtime West Oakland arts institution known for its hands-on industrial arts classes and fire performances, abruptly closed Sunday amid financial problems, leaving employees and the community uncertain about its future. sfist.com/2026/10/26/t...

the 90s. Wings Hauser chewing scenery. KROQ DJ Frazer Smith who I saw do some profane standup at the Roxy when he opened for my dad’s band in the 70s. Shot in 1989 it’s a perfect Melrose/LA time capsule. @vinsyn.bsky.social put out a DVD that’s now out of print. Boo. #horor #filmsky #PaleBlood

Romania to hunt a killer stalking the neon drenched, glass bricked streets of LA. Admirably directed by Juilliard grad V.V. Dachin Hsu who brings a female & art school sensibility to the film. Also as a Gen X Angeleno both fun & wild to see the city as I remember it & Martel Ave. where I lived in

Our favorite quote from last night! Obama really roasted Trump, and it was glorious.

And for the first 2026 FANGORIA Chainsaw Award of the night, BEST SUPPORTING PERFORMANCE goes to... Amy Madigan for WEAPONS! We’re not arguing with The Academy on this one… this time.

And first EDITOR'S EYEBALL AWARD of the 2026 FANGORIA Chainsaw Awards goes to... Joe Bird! Wowing us with his performances in TALK TO ME and LEVITICUS, we can’t wait to see what’s next.

welp. I guess I am here to quibble with the critics again. And I love film criticism and religiously read the critics I learn from/admire. But boy… I know they’re seeing the same terrible films I see. Sometimes I am baffled by the impulse to be easier on a film than it deserves or eviscerating a

imagery & cleverly executed sequences. Yes it feels like it takes too long for liftoff but I was kept in by Ackie (excellent choice) & Tom Rhys Harries who was quite good. Also, the audience applauded at the end which almost never happens so I would say people weren’t mad or let down. Overall this

feels to me like “B” DC fare that I wish took a bigger swing & went darker since this is a story about a VILLAIN after all. Villains can be charming, fun, seductive, even sympathetic to a degree. Not sorry I went to see it. #movies #DC #Clayface #filmsky

work in his writing on the topics of sin, morality, people masquerading as something they aren’t. His being a villain before the “substance” is more interesting and does more with the concept of people wearing masks. In 1941 Cleckley wrote a seminal book on psychopathy “The Mask of Sanity”

that explores how psychopaths “wear a mask of normalcy - appearing charming, intelligent, and rational—while hiding a profound lack of conscience, empathy, and genuine emotional response.” At any rate, it’s a shame the story feels so neutered and inert. That aside, some memorable horror

watching dailies. In the end my biggest complaint is that it feels stepped on, suffocated, deformed by its being a DC “product.” My sense - especially because there’s a gaping plothole in the film, is that Flanagan & Amini came up with a rich conceit & reveal - a

handsome guy, seems nice, hardworking but he has a police file that reveals something dark? Because absolutely nothing comes of this big moment she reads the file when I was fully expecting the payoff, that she had been helping a monster. It feels like someone chickened out. Flanagan does such rich

film that - considering its origin & what its aspiring to be/achieve - doesn’t seem to deserve the rigorous & exacting critique it’s on the receiving end of. If one has sat through OTHER MOMMY and been more mild in one’s take for that film than CLAYFACE - the balance feels off or if one

lambastes both in equal measure. In short, there is some good stuff here and I had the very opposite experience I had watching OTHER MOMMY in that I felt the presence of people making it, humans working on drafts of the script, humans working on the effects, makeup, storyboarding, someone

I know some critics & viewers enjoyed this & I went off that positive word of mouth but the ham-handed script & derivative pastiche didn’t bowl me over. It’s a fine B- creaturefeature w/one really great idea that I loved but

the derivative pastiche didn’t wow me - all the “Nostromo” - Blade Runner - Retro-Ridley tech is cool if you haven’t seen a lot of movies but felt illogically anachronistic like it was done for “the bit” & would encourage the director to avoid trying to sound deep/ponderous in screenwriting as

some of the lines and the way the scenes were directed felt antithetical to the director’s natural strengths. Also a bit confusing at times. Appreciate the “American Werewolf” commitment to practical effects. Keep expectations low and have an edible maybe. #horror #horrorsky #Shudder

Harold Lloyd - terrible politics - incredible performer - lack the # of characters & historian bonafides to do justice to SAFETY LAST but what a must-see movie for Angelenos & cinephiles. Amazing how modern the 1923 movie feels & to watch it work on an audience in the theater. #filmsky #movie #LA
