While the setting of Strange Cases is inspired by late 1800s Philippines under Spanish colonial rule, I played around with timelines and historical events to discuss more contemporary issues, such as that of US neocolonialism in the Philippines.

This lore in Strange Cases was inspired by the Balangiga bells, three historic church bells that were taken by the US Army as war trophies from the Church of San Lorenzo de Martir in Eastern Samar, Philippines.

During the Philippine-American War, resistance fighters in Balangiga staged a surprise attack on US soldiers. In retaliation, the US army committed what is now called the Balangiga massacre, killing thousands of Filipinos and seizing the church bells as spoils of war.

kickstarter.comComing soon: Heavy Are The Years Story CollectionThree illustrated SFF novellas in one collection exploring the theme of time and how it effects us.

This bit of folklore in Strange Cases was inspired by the manananggal, a creature in Filipino folklore that splits in half and preys on pregnant women by using a long, thin tongue to steal unborn children.

As the graphic novel is set in an alternate universe Philippines, I decided not to directly pull anything from Filipino history or mythology and write lore thats thematically inspired by those instead.
